Chapter 2 - THE MIDNIGHT AUDITUpstairs in the primary master suite of the Lake Forest estate, Russell Vaughn poured himself a generous glass of twenty-year-old single malt Scotch, swirling the amber liquid as he stared out the floor-to-ceiling windows at the sprawling front lawn.

Gwendolyn Fairchild reclined gracefully on the velvet chaise lounge, a silk robe draped over her shoulders, sipping sparkling water with an expression of serene accomplishment.

"You were magnificent down there, Russell," Gwendolyn purred, her voice dripping with artificial sweetness. "So decisive. So strong. A true man of the house. Heather has needed a reality check for years. She grew far too comfortable thinking she could coast on your success without showing proper gratitude."

Russell took a sip of his scotch, frowning slightly as he rubbed his right arm where Phoebe had bitten him during the chaos in the ballroom.

"She’s changed, Gwen," Russell muttered, swirling the glass. "Did you see her eyes when I gave the order? She didn't cry. She didn't beg. She just... stared at me. Like she was looking through me."

Gwendolyn rolled her eyes, letting out a delicate, dismissive laugh. "Oh, please. What could a penniless nurse from an ordinary background possibly do? She has no money, no family of any consequence, and zero legal leverage. Once we finalize the divorce next week, we’ll grant her a modest alimony pittance, keep full custody of Phoebe, and put this entire embarrassing chapter behind us."

"You're right," Russell sighed, letting the tension slip from his shoulders as he walked over to his custom mahogany desk. He tapped the keyboard of his high-end workstation, bringing up the master financial dashboard for Vaughn Enterprises. "And the timing couldn't be better. The Series C funding round closes tomorrow morning at ten. With the Silicon Peak venture capital infusion hitting our primary accounts, our valuation jumps to four hundred million. We’ll be untouchable."

He reached for his secure corporate phone to check the wire transfer queue from the lead institutional investor—the mysterious Atlanta-based conglomerate known only as Apex Holdings.

The screen flashed red.

ERROR 403: ACCOUNT ACCESS RESTRICTED BY FEDERAL LIQUIDITY INJUNCTION.

Russell frowned, tapping his fingers against the polished wood. "That's odd. Must be a routine server maintenance glitch at the bank."

He opened a secondary browser tab to log directly into his corporate banking portal at Chase Manhattan.

ACCOUNT FROZEN UNDER COURT ORDER. PENDING ASSET FORFEITURE AUDIT.

Russell’s breath hitched. He sat up straight, his heart suddenly hammering against his ribs. "What the hell...?"

"What is it, darling?" Gwendolyn asked, sitting up on the chaise, noticing the sudden rigidity in his posture.

"The... the bank accounts," Russell stammered, clicking frantically through three different corporate ledgers. Every single one of them displayed the same terrifying crimson warning. Frozen. Locked. Zero balance available. "The Silicon Peak wire... it didn't clear. In fact, all our revolving lines of credit have been instantly recalled by the syndicate."

Before Gwendolyn could reply, the heavy oak double doors of the master suite were blown wide open with a deafening crash.

Three burly private security guards hired by Russell’s firm stumbled backward into the room, thrown violently aside as four men in bespoke charcoal suits marched into the suite with the terrifying, synchronized precision of a military hit squad.

Leading them was a tall, imposing man in his late thirties with sharp, patrician features, piercing ice-blue eyes, and a tailored Brioni suit that cost more than Russell’s first car. Behind him walked three other men who looked like corporate executioners carved from granite.

Russell stood up so fast his leather chair tipped over backward, crashing loudly against the hardwood floor.

"Who the hell are you?!" Russell shouted, pointing a shaking finger at the lead intruder. "How did you get past the perimeter gates?! Security! Call the police!"

The lead man stopped dead five feet from the desk. A cold, humorless smile touched the corners of his mouth.

"Your security guards are currently tied up in the guardhouse, Mr. Vaughn," Grant Walton said smoothly, his voice dropping an octave as he stepped forward. "And as for the police, they’re currently outside securing the perimeter under federal warrants signed twenty minutes ago."

Gwendolyn shrieked, clutching her silk robe around her throat as she scrambled backward off the chaise. "Russell! Who is this madman?"

Russell stared at Grant, a creeping, cold dread coiling in the pit of his stomach. There was something familiar about those eyes. Something terrifyingly cold that reminded him uncomfortably of the woman he had locked in his basement an hour ago.

"My name is Grant Walton," my eldest brother said softly, sliding a heavy leather-bound document across the polished mahogany desk directly in front of Russell’s trembling hands. "And I’ve come to audit your company."
