Chapter 4 - THE DISSOLUTION OF MEREDITHAt 10:00 AM the following morning, the front desk of the hotel called Ethan’s suite.

“Mr. Cole,” the receptionist said nervously. “There is a woman in the lobby claiming to be your wife. She is accompanied by two gentlemen in suits. She says she has an urgent legal notice.”
Ethan looked at the security monitor he had linked to the hotel’s hallway cameras.
Meredith stood near the elevators. She looked terrible. Her flawless makeup was heavy, attempting to hide the dark purple circles under her eyes. Her tailored clothes were slightly wrinkled, her posture rigid with an anxious, vibrating energy.
“Send her up alone,” Ethan said into the phone. “Tell the two men in suits that if they step out of the elevator, the police officers sitting in room 402 will arrest them for violating a temporary restraining order.”
Three minutes later, a knock sounded on the suite door.
Ethan opened it.
Meredith stepped into the room, her eyes darting frantically around the space until she caught sight of the open bedroom door. She made a move toward it, but Ethan stepped into her path, his frame filling the doorway.
“She’s sleeping, Meredith,” Ethan said, his voice completely devoid of emotion. “Don't push your luck.”
Meredith stopped. She grabbed her leather handbag with both hands, her knuckles white.
“Ethan, you have to stop this,” she pleaded, her voice cracking with a high, desperate frequency. “My father’s legal team has already prepared a full mental health evaluation claim against you. They are going to frame your attack on him yesterday as a psychotic break brought on by financial stress!”
“Is that what they told you to say?” Ethan asked softly.
“They are going to destroy you, Ethan!” Meredith yelled, stepping closer, her eyes wide with terror. “You don't understand how far my father’s reach goes! He called the District Attorney last night! He called the Chief of Police! They are going to throw out that forensic report from the advocacy center! They’ll claim you inflicted those bruises yourself to gain leverage in a divorce!”
Ethan stared at her.
A month ago, those words would have filled him with absolute terror. A month ago, he would have believed that the Whitaker empire was an unassailable mountain of gold and influence.
Now, looking at Meredith, he saw only a terrified, broken servant begging her master not to whip her.
“Did you know he hit her, Meredith?” Ethan asked, his tone quiet, almost conversational.
Meredith flinched as if she had been slapped. “Ethan... he... he was just teaching her discipline—”
“He hit her because she missed a C-sharp,” Ethan cut in, pulling his phone from his pocket and tapping the screen.
He didn't hand her the phone. He simply played the four-second audio file he had extracted from the Beacon Hill server.
The sharp slap echo filled the hotel room.
Lily’s gasp.
Charles’s voice: “Keep your back straight, or I will break it for you.”
Meredith froze. Every bit of air left her lungs. Her jaw dropped open, her eyes fixing on the small black screen in Ethan’s hand as if it were a venomous snake.
“Where... where did you get that?” she whispered, her voice barely audible.
“It’s been on your father’s server for three weeks,” Ethan revealed. “You walked past that room every Tuesday afternoon while she was crying. You sat downstairs drinking tea with your mother while your daughter was being terrorized upstairs.”
Meredith took a shaky step back, her hands flying to her mouth, tears finally bursting past her eyelids. “I... I didn't think... he told me he was just being firm... he said she was getting soft because of your middle-class upbringing—”
“Don't blame him for your cowardice, Meredith,” Ethan said, his voice cutting through her sobs like a razor. “He’s a monster. But you... you’re her mother. And you chose his money over your child’s safety.”
He reached into his jacket pocket and pulled out a manila envelope, tossing it onto the entry table beside her.
“What is that?” she wept.
“Divorce papers,” Ethan said. “And a full waiver of all claims to the Whitaker trust, property, and assets. I don't want a single penny of your family’s blood money. All I want is sole legal and physical custody of Lily, with zero visitation rights for you or your parents.”
Meredith looked at the envelope, then back at Ethan’s cold, unyielding face.
“My father will never let me sign that,” she whimpered. “He will strip my name from the family trust. He will ruin me.”

Ethan stepped closer to her, leaning down until his eyes were inches from hers.
“Your father isn't going to be worrying about your name, Meredith,” Ethan whispered. “By nine o'clock tonight, your father is going to be worrying about surviving the rest of his life behind bars.”
