Chapter 3 - The Truth in the GlassTwo weeks passed, transforming the atmosphere inside the Bennett estate.

The once cold, silent mansion was now alive with the sounds of children’s laughter. Brandon had made a full recovery, his eyes bright as he spent his afternoons in the mansion’s vast library, reading historical books with Richard. Emma spent her days baking cookies with Rosa in the sunlit kitchen, her bright yellow dresses adding color to the marble corridors.
For Laura, those two weeks felt like a dream she was terrified to wake up from.
She sat opposite Richard in his private glass garden room overlooking the sprawling autumn gardens. Sunlight bathed the room, casting warm geometric patterns across the table where they shared morning coffee.
Richard looked healthier. The deep, dark circles under his eyes had faded, and the bitter edge in his voice had been replaced by a quiet, steady peace whenever Laura was near.
"You look beautiful today, Laura," Richard said softly, setting his coffee cup down.
Laura blushed, smoothing the fabric of the elegant emerald wool sweater Richard had ordered for her. "I still feel like an imposter, Richie. Sometimes I wake up in the middle of the night thinking I’m still in that cold apartment, terrified that Brandon’s fever is coming back."
Richard reached across the table, taking her hand in his. "You will never go back there, Laura. I’m having my attorneys draft a permanent living trust for you and the children. The estate, the accounts... everything is being put in your name."
Laura shook her head firmly. "I don't want your fortune, Richie. I just want you. I spent twenty years believing the only man I ever loved was dead."
Richard looked down at their joined hands, a heavy silence settling over him. He squeezed her fingers gently. "Laura... there’s something I need to tell you. Something about the accident four years ago. The one that put me in this chair."
Laura leaned forward, her eyes filled with concern. "What happened?"
"It wasn't an accident," Richard said, his voice dropping into a somber register. "When I took over my father’s business, my goal was to legitimize everything—to pull the Bennett name out of organized crime and transition our capital into legal real estate and tech investments. But my father’s former partners, led by Viktor Kozlov, didn't want to go clean. They wanted the syndicate to keep running its illegal pipelines."
He touched his paralyzed legs beneath the table.
"Four years ago, Viktor sabotaged my vehicle," Richard continued grimly. "My brakes failed on the highway. The crash killed my driver and severed my spine. Viktor thought I would die or relinquish control. Instead, I fought back. I spent four years crushing his network from this chair."
"Richie..." Laura whispered, fear creeping back into her heart. "Is he still dangerous?"
"He’s desperate," Richard acknowledged honestly. "Which makes him dangerous. That’s why I have doubled security around the estate. You and the children are safe here, Laura. My men would lay down their lives before letting anyone cross those gates."
At that moment, the double doors of the garden room opened. Margaret walked in, her face unusual in its tension.
"Mr. Bennett," Margaret said carefully. "There is a man at the main security gate. He is demanding to speak with Miss Hayes."
Laura frowned in confusion. "With me? I don't know anyone in Chicago except Mrs. Alvarez from my old building."
Margaret glanced nervously at Richard before looking back at Laura. "He claims his name is Greg Hayes. He claims he is your ex-husband and the father of your children."
Laura felt the blood drain from her face. She dropped her coffee spoon, the metal clattering loudly against the saucer.
Richard’s eyes narrowed into slits of lethal steel. The warm, loving atmosphere in the room vanished in an instant, replaced by an oppressive, terrifying coldness.
"Greg?" Laura gasped, her voice trembling. "How... how did he find me?"
Greg Hayes was the mistake Laura had made seven years ago—a charismatic, gambling-addicted man she had married during a period of intense loneliness, hoping to give Brandon a father. The marriage had been two years of emotional abuse, stolen savings, and terrifying debts before Greg vanished into the night when Laura became pregnant with Emma, leaving her with thousands of dollars in debt.
"How did he know she was here, Margaret?" Richard demanded, his voice dangerously low.
"He arrived in a sleek black town car, sir," Margaret reported. "He was holding a legal packet and shouting for the news crews down the street."
Richard hit his intercom button. "Harrison!"
Harrison’s voice came through instantly. "Sir?"
"Bring the man at the gate into the holding room in the basement," Richard commanded, his jaw set in stone. "Do not let the press see him. And have two security officers escort Laura and the children to the upper panic suite."
"No, Richie!" Laura stood up, her chest heaving. "I’m not hiding from him! Greg is a coward. He only shows up when he thinks he can get money. If he’s here, someone paid him to come!"

Richard looked at her, seeing the fierce, protective fire in her eyes. He reached out and took her hand.
"Then we will face him together," Richard said coldly. "Let's go see what your ex-husband thinks he’s worth."
