Chapter 6 - The New FoundationSix months later.

The spring sun over Lake Michigan was bright, warm, and radiant, casting golden reflections across the manicured lawns of the Hayes estate. The air smelled of blooming lilacs and fresh-cut grass, carrying the sound of children laughing, splashing, and running across the stone patio.

Inside the grand kitchen, Catherine Vance stood by the marble island, laughing as Ethan tried—and hilariously failed—to flip a pancake without dropping it on the floor.

“You call yourself a teenager, Ethan, but you have the hand-eye coordination of a confused penguin,” Chloe teased from the kitchen table, where she and her three sisters were drawing pictures with colored markers.

“Hey, culinary art is a delicate science!” Ethan protested, grinning as he caught the next pancake on the edge of the spatula.

Standing near the doorway, leaning casually against the doorframe with a cup of black coffee in his hand, Alexander watched the scene unfold. His face, usually carved from stern lines and perpetual vigilance, relaxed into a deep, genuine smile.

The transition hadn't happened overnight. There were hard conversations, legal battles to strip Mercer of his remaining assets, and months of healing for Catherine and her girls. But slowly, out of the chaos and fear, something permanent had taken root in this house.

Catherine turned around, catching Alexander watching her from the doorway. She wiped her hands on a dish towel and walked over to him, her eyes bright with a quiet, abiding peace.

“You’re staring, Mr. Hayes,” she noted softly, a playful smile touching her lips.

“I’m evaluating,” Alexander corrected, taking a sip of his coffee. “My estate has been thoroughly overrun by four unruly girls, an incompetent chef in training, and an independent woman who refuses to follow my security protocols.”

Catherine laughed, resting her hand lightly against his chest, feeling the steady, strong beat of his heart beneath his shirt. “And yet, somehow, I don't think you’re planning to evict us anytime soon.”

“Never,” Alexander murmured, setting his coffee cup down on the counter and wrapping his arms around her waist, pulling her close against him. “I spent my entire life building an empire of fear, believing that power was the only shield worth having. I was wrong.”

He looked over her shoulder toward the table, where Maya and the youngest, Zoe, were holding up a colorful crayon drawing of a large stone castle with a fierce-looking knight standing guard outside—and five smiling princesses inside the walls.

“What is that?” Alexander asked softly.

“It’s our new home,” Catherine whispered, leaning her head against his shoulder. “The one where nobody has to hide beneath the table ever again.”

Alexander kissed the top of her head, his eyes closing as the morning sunlight washed over them both. The underworld could keep its whispers, its turf wars, and its shadows. For the first time in his life, Alexander Hayes had everything he ever needed right where he stood.
