Chapter 6 - White Roses in SpringSix months later.

The grand ballroom of the Moretti estate was once again filled with light, music, and the warm chatter of over two hundred guests.
It was an anniversary celebration—not for a business merger or a political alliance, but for the renewal of Vincent and Sofia Moretti’s marriage vows.
The room looked entirely different from the cold, sterile space it had been six months earlier. The heavy crystal chandeliers were draped with green ivy, warm golden candles lit every table, and the air was filled with the sweet scent of fresh spring flowers.
Standing near the grand entrance, wearing a brilliant dark navy suit, Vincent stood talking with Daniel and several local civic leaders. He looked relaxed, his face carrying a warmth that the people of the Hudson Valley had never seen before.
At the center of the room, Sofia stood in an elegant, flowing emerald green dress that complemented her glowing skin and dark, shining hair. She laughed freely, holding a glass of sparkling cider as she spoke with the wives of local business owners who had once shunned her memory.
Grace Carter walked through the room, wearing a beautiful navy dress, managing the catering staff not as a servant, but as the Director of Operations for the Moretti Estate.
Beside her, Emily—dressed in a sweet yellow dress—was showing a group of children how to play a game on her blue phone, her laughter echoing happily against the high ceilings.
The music slowed, a soft string quartet playing a gentle Italian waltz.
Vincent excused himself from his conversation and walked across the crowded ballroom. The crowd parted naturally for him, but there was no fear in their eyes now—only respect and warmth.
He reached Sofia, extending his hand to her with a soft, bow of his head. "May I have this dance, Mrs. Moretti?"
Sofia smiled, placing her slender hand in his. "I thought you’d never ask, Mr. Moretti."
They stepped onto the center of the polished dance floor, surrounding guests stepping back to give them space. Vincent wrapped his arm around her waist, pulling her close against his chest as they began to glide effortlessly across the marble.
"You look breathtaking tonight," Vincent whispered into her ear, his breath warm against her skin.
"And you look like a man who finally threw away all his secrets," Sofia teased gently, looking up into his dark eyes.
They danced in silence for a few long, beautiful moments, the rhythm of the music holding them together like a anchor in a stormy sea.
Sofia glanced over toward the grand fireplace.
Sitting on the mantelpiece was a large, silver vase filled with a magnificent arrangement of deep red roses, soft pink peonies, and vibrant green ferns.
Noticeably absent were any white roses.
Sofia looked back up at Vincent, a soft, knowing wink lighting up her eyes. "Some things look beautiful because nobody asks if they belong where they were put."
Vincent laughed—a deep, genuine sound that resonated through his chest. "And white roses in winter are just pretending they aren't cold."
"We aren't cold anymore, Vince," Sofia whispered, resting her head against his shoulder as he spun her beneath the golden light of the chandelier.
May you like
"No," Vincent agreed, his hand tightening softly around hers, feeling the steady, warm pulse of her heart against his own. "We're home."
Outside, the warm spring wind rustled through the ancient maples of the Hudson Valley, carrying away the dark ghosts of the past, leaving behind a legacy built not on fear or shadows, but on an unbroken promise of loyalty, justice, and love.
