Chapter 4 - The Shadow in Columbus

For the next two weeks, the Palazzo Rossi became a sanctuary I had never dreamed possible.
For the first time in four years, I slept through the night. Maya blossomed under the sun of the Italian gardens, spending her afternoons chasing colorful butterflies through the olive groves with Sofia, who treated her like a long-lost granddaughter. She ate fresh pasta, drank sweet peach juice, and her small face regained its healthy, rosy glow, the terror of her father's household fading like a bad dream.
Matteo thrived. Under my care, the tiny infant gained weight, his colicky crying completely vanished, and he became a sweet, quiet baby who spent his days strapped to my chest in a soft linen wrap as I walked through the palazzo's vast library or sat by the infinity pool.
Marco was a mystery I couldn't solve.
To the outside world, he was the Capo di Tutti Capi—the head of the Rossi Syndicate, a powerful organization that controlled shipping ports, real estate, and financial networks across Southern Europe. I would watch from the balcony as black Mercedes sedans arrived at all hours of the night, carrying powerful politicians, international businessmen, and dangerous men with cold eyes who bowed to Marco before entering his study.
Yet, inside the private wing of the estate, Marco was entirely different.
Every evening at seven o'clock, no matter what business he was conducting, Marco would clear his schedule. He would strip off his tailored suit jacket, roll up his sleeves, and sit on the carpet in the nursery, allowing Maya to place plastic flower crowns on his silvered hair while he gently cradled Matteo in his lap.
He watched me with a quiet, watchful reverence that made my heart race in ways I didn't understand. He never crossed a boundary. He never demanded anything of me. He simply provided a shield of absolute security, as if my presence alone had brought light back into a house that had been drowned in grief after his wife's death.
Then, on a Tuesday morning, the peace shattered.
I was sitting in Marco's study, nursing Matteo while Maya drew a picture of a cat on the floor, when the heavy oak doors crashed open.
Lev stepped into the room, holding a high-encrypted satellite tablet. His face was dark, rigid with tension.
"Boss," Lev said, looking at Marco, who was sitting at his desk reviewing financial reports. "We have a ping from the border security network at Fiumicino Airport."
Marco didn't look up from his papers. "Speak."
"An American citizen landed forty minutes ago on a direct flight from Atlanta," Lev said, his voice tight. "He bypassed standard diplomatic customs using a high-level legal liaison credential issued by the U.S. Department of Justice."
I froze. The room went instantly cold.
Matteo felt the sudden tension in my body and paused his feeding, looking up at me with wide, dark eyes.
"What is his name, Lev?" Marco asked smoothly, though his pen stopped moving across the paper.
Lev glanced at the tablet screen, then met my terrified eyes. "Gregory Thomas. Senior Prosecuting Attorney for Franklin County, Ohio."
A sharp, high-pitched gasp escaped my throat. The room spun wildly around me.
Greg was here. In Rome.
"He... he found me," I choked out, my voice shrill with hysteria. "Oh God, he found me... he’s going to take Maya... he’s going to use his badge... he’s going to—"
Before I could spiral into full panic, Marco was out of his chair.
In two long strides, he crossed the room and knelt down in front of my chair. He placed his warm, heavy hands over my knee, grounding me instantly.
"Look at me, Clara," Marco commanded, his gray eyes burning with an intense, steady flame. "Look at me."
I forced my tear-filled eyes to lock onto his.
"No one is taking your daughter," Marco said, every word delivered with the weight of an iron vault closing. "No one is touching you. He is in my city now. He has no badge here. He has no power here. He is simply a ghost who doesn't know he's already dead."
"Marco, you don't understand!" I sobbed, clutching Matteo tight against my chest. "Greg is ruthless! He brought private investigators! He’ll go to the American Embassy! He’ll claim I kidnapped Maya! He’ll bring Italian police to your gates!"
Marco stood up slowly, a cold, terrible smile curving his lips. It was a smile that didn't reach his eyes—a smile of a predator watching a foolish animal walk directly into a steel trap.
"Let him go to the embassy," Marco said quietly. "Let him call the police. Lev, where is Mr. Thomas heading now?"
"He booked a suite at the St. Regis Hotel in the city center," Lev reported. "He has already retained a local Italian corporate law firm to issue an emergency international child recovery warrant."
Marco walked over to a glass decanter on the sideboard, poured two fingers of amber scotch, and drank it in one smooth swallow.
"Contact Signor Moretti at the Ministry of Justice," Marco instructed Lev, his voice dropping into a register of terrifying calm. "Tell him that an American tourist is attempting to abuse international legal channels on Rossi territory. Have the emergency warrant delayed in committee for forty-eight hours."
"And then, boss?" Lev asked.
May you like
Marco turned back to face me, his gray eyes locking onto mine with absolute, unwavering devotion.
"And then," Marco whispered, "invite Mr. Gregory Thomas to dinner at the Palazzo."
