Chapter 6 - Where the Sun Touches the GardenOne year later.

The morning sun cast warm, golden beams across the restored gardens of the Vaughn estate. The stone fountain splashed merrily in the center of the courtyard, surrounded by blooming white roses and lush green lawns.
The dark memories of the mansion had been completely swept away. The cellar access panel had been removed entirely, replaced by an expanded sunroom filled with natural light, indoor plants, and children's art easels.
Sitting on a wooden bench near the rose garden was Alexander, dressed in a comfortable linen shirt, reading through a stack of architectural blueprints.
The Clara Vaughn Memorial Foundation for Children’s Protection—a non-profit organization Alexander had established using the liquidated proceeds from the Cole family asset forfeiture—had just opened its third legal assistance center in the state, providing free high-powered legal defense for abused and vulnerable children.
A sound of bright, ringing laughter echoed across the lawn.
Alexander looked up to see Sofia, now five years old, running across the grass wearing a bright yellow sundress. Her chubby cheeks were rosy with health, her eyes sparkling with uninhibited joy as she chased a golden retriever puppy through the flowers.
Running beside her was Dr. Elena Rostova, who had stayed on as a close family friend and director of child therapy services for the new foundation.
"Daddy! Look!" Sofia shouted, running up to the bench and tumbling happily into Alexander’s lap. She held up a bright, hand-drawn picture of three people standing under a giant yellow sun: Alexander, Sofia, and an angel in the sky with a warm smile representing Clara.
Alexander wrapped his arms tightly around his daughter, kissing her cheek as she giggled.
"It’s the most beautiful painting in the world, sweetheart," Alexander said softly, holding the paper carefully.
"I made it for Mommy’s book," Sofia said proudly, tapping the leather-bound journal that sat safely on the bench beside Alexander. "She would like it, right?"
"She would love it, Sofia," Alexander smiled, his eyes glistening with warm, peaceful tears. "She would be so proud of how brave and strong you are."
Harrison walked out onto the patio carrying a tray of fresh lemonade, setting it down on the garden table with a warm smile.
"News report just came through from the federal court, sir," Harrison mentioned quietly, leaning in so Sofia wouldn't pay attention. "Julian Cole received fifteen years at Fort Dix. Veronica’s plea bargain was rejected—she was sentenced to twelve years without parole."
Alexander looked down at his daughter, who was currently laughing as the puppy licked her hand. The news of his former abusers didn't bring a surge of anger or satisfaction anymore. It was simply justice served—a locked door on a dark chapter that was forever closed.
"Thank you, Harrison," Alexander said gently. "Let’s keep the television off today. We have a playground to build in the backyard."
"Already assembled, sir," Harrison grinned. "Complete with the double slide Miss Sofia requested."
Sofia gasped with delight, slipping down from Alexander’s lap. "The slide is ready?! Come on, Daddy! Let’s go fast!"

Alexander stood up, taking his daughter's warm, soft hand in his. Together, they walked across the sunlit grass toward the back garden, their laughter filling the morning air.
The mansion was no longer a place of hidden rooms, cruel secrets, or silent tears. It was a home filled with light, laughter, and an unbreakable love that no darkness could ever dim again.
