Chapter 3 - The Price of ExposureThe room felt suspended in time.

Adrian couldn't breathe. He forgot the ache in his shoulder, forgot the erratic rhythm of his failing heart, forgot the entire billion-dollar criminal empire waiting for his orders across the river. All he could see were those dark, wide eyes looking back at him with a mix of innocent curiosity and faint hesitation.
Sarah wiped her tears quickly, kneeling beside the couch so she was at eye level with her daughter. "Lily, sweetie... why aren't you in bed?"
"I heard the loud talking," Lily whispered, her eyes remaining fixed on Adrian. She took a slow, timid step forward, her small hand squeezing her teddy bear tighter. "Mommy... who is he?"
Adrian slowly lowered himself off the sofa, dropping to his knees on the hardwood floor despite the agonizing pull on his wounded shoulder. He kept his distance, staying six feet away so as not to frighten her, making himself as small and unthreatening as a six-foot-two mob boss could possibly be.
"Hi, Lily," Adrian said. His voice, usually so cold and command-ready, trembled with unrefined tenderness. "I'm... I'm Adrian."
Lily looked at him, then looked down at the drawing resting on the coffee table—the picture of the man with the dark, blank oval for a head.
"Are you the daddy who lives in the dark?" she asked innocently.
A painful knot squeezed Adrian’s chest. "I was," he whispered, holding out a small, shiny brass object from his pocket—a vintage wind-up music box shaped like a brass ship, the very one he had carried in his pocket for three years waiting for this moment. "But I brought you something. To see if you'd let me stay in the light."
Lily’s eyes widened at the gleaming brass ship. Children have an innate ability to sense genuine love, and despite the dark shadows that followed Adrian Moretti, the devotion radiating from him was absolute. She took two slow steps toward him, her tiny yellow-booted socks quiet on the floor.
She reached out and took the small music box from his hand. Her fingers brushed his palm—a soft, warm touch that felt like an electric jolt straight to Adrian’s fragile heart.
"It makes music?" she asked, looking up into his face.
"You turn the little wheel on the bottom," Adrian guided her softly, his breath catching as she didn't pull away.
She turned the wheel. A soft, clear melody—a classic lullaby—filled the quiet living room. Lily smiled, a bright, beautiful smile that lit up the entire room, revealing a missing baby tooth on the side.
"You have eyes like mine," Lily declared, stepping closer and reaching up with her small hand to touch his cheek.
"I do," Adrian choked out, tears finally breaking free and running down his cheeks. "I have your eyes, Lily."
Sarah stood near the kitchen, her hand pressed against her mouth as she wept silently, watching the miracle unfolding on her living room rug.
Suddenly, the quiet music of the brass ship was shattered by a sharp, violent vibration from Adrian's wool coat.
It was his encrypted satellite phone. The emergency line.
Adrian’s demeanor changed in an instant. The tenderness vanished, replaced by the lethal hyper-awareness that had kept him alive for a decade. He stood up smoothly, pulling the phone from his pocket while keeping his body positioned between Lily and the front door.
"Talk to me, Vincent," Adrian commanded into the receiver.
"Boss, we have a breach!" Vincent’s voice came through the speaker, distorted by heavy static and the distinct, terrifying sound of automatic gunfire in the distance. "Volkov’s crew... they didn't hit Queens! It was a feint! They tracked a burner phone signal from one of the hospital transport vans! They're in Bay Ridge! Three suburban utility vans just blew through our outer perimeter two blocks away!"
Sarah gasped, rushing forward to scoop Lily into her arms. "Adrian! What's happening?!"
"Get into the back room!" Adrian ordered, reaching under his wool coat with his right hand and unholstering his suppressed 9mm Sig Sauer. "Vincent! How long until your inner team secures the stoop?!"
"Thirty seconds, boss! But they brought heavy equipment! They're tearing through the street—"
The sound of shattering glass exploded from the front bay windows.
A heavy black smoke canister crashed through the glass, bouncing across the hardwood floor and spewing thick, chemical tear gas into the living room.
Lily began to scream in sheer terror.
"Sarah, go!" Adrian yelled, his voice cutting through the panic. He grabbed a wet kitchen towel from the sink, tossed it to Sarah to cover Lily’s face, and kicked the smoking canister back toward the front doorway.
Through the broken window, the sound of heavy boots scrambling up the fire escape echoed dangerously fast.
Adrian raised his weapon, his eyes narrowing into cold slits of pure, protective rage. His heart monitor was screaming against his chest, warning him that his pulse had passed 180 beats per minute—a lethal threshold for his condition. Black spots danced across his field of vision, and a dull, crushing pain spread across his chest.
Not tonight, Adrian thought violently, locking his jaw and steadying his front sight on the window frame. You don't touch my daughter tonight.
The first gunman dropped through the broken window, wearing a tactical mask and holding a short-barreled shotgun.
Adrian fired three rounds in rapid succession.
The bullets struck the intruder squarely in the chest, lifting him off his feet and throwing him back out into the rainy night.
Before the second gunman could enter, the front door of the apartment was kicked open with a thunderous bang.
Vincent Russo burst into the room, flanked by three heavily armed Moretti tactical guards. "Clear! Clear the hall!"
"They're on the fire escape!" Adrian shouted, coughing against the stinging smoke. "Get Sarah and Lily to the armored transport in the alley! Now!"
Vincent grabbed Sarah by the arm, guiding her toward the back emergency exit while two guards formed a human shield around them. Lily was sobbing hysterically, her small arms wrapped tightly around her mother's neck, her eyes wide with terror as she looked back over Sarah's shoulder.
She looked at Adrian, standing in the middle of the gunsmoke, holding a gun, his face covered in blood and sweat.
"Daddy!" she shrieked through her tears. "Daddy, come with us!"

The word hit Adrian like a physical blow. Daddy.
He turned, ignoring the chest pain threatening to tear his heart apart, and ran toward the back stairwell behind them.
