Chapter 5 - Rebuilding the BrokenTwo months later.

The spring morning was clear and bright, the warm sun melting the last traces of winter snow from the rolling lawns of the estate.

The heavy iron gates at the front of the property were still there, but the dark, armed guards who used to patrol the driveway had been replaced by a quiet, professional security detail dressed in simple navy blazers.

In the backyard, near the ancient oak tree that overlooked the valley, a new wooden playground had been constructed—a massive structure with swings, a spiral slide, and a wooden playhouse painted light blue.

I sat on a wooden bench nearby, a cup of fresh coffee in my hand, watching Chloe run across the grass.

She was wearing a bright yellow sundress, her dark curls bouncing in the morning breeze. Her cheeks were flushed with health, her laughter echoing clearly across the garden—a sound that had completely banished the cold, hollow silence that used to suffocate this house.

Beside me on the bench sat Grace.

She was no longer wearing her maid’s uniform. She wore a comfortable beige sweater and jeans, a small sketchbook resting on her lap.

Two weeks after the incident with Dominic, I had officially hired Grace as Chloe’s full-time private guardian and estate manager, with a salary that guaranteed her financial independence for the rest of her life. But more than that, she had become family.

"She ate all her vegetables at breakfast this morning," Grace said with a gentle smile, looking over at Chloe, who was currently trying to climb the small ladder to the slide. "Without complaining once."

"That’s a miracle," I smiled, setting my coffee cup down. "Last month she tried to hide her broccoli under the rug."

"She’s getting stronger every day, Julian," Grace said softly, her expression turning serious. "The therapist says her night terrors have almost completely stopped. She knows she’s safe here. With you."

I looked down at my hands. The heavy gold signet ring I used to wear—the symbol of my authority over the syndicate—was gone.

Over the last eight weeks, with the help of my legal team, I had systematically dismantled the illegal branches of the Hale business. I had sold off the questionable shipping routes, handed over evidence on our former underworld associates to federal authorities, and transferred seventy percent of my wealth into a charitable foundation dedicated to children’s emergency medical care.

I was no longer the feared "Boss" of the city.

I was just a father.

"Mr. Julian!"

A tiny, sweet voice called out from the playground.

I turned. Chloe was standing at the top of the wooden slide, waving her small hands wildly in the air.

"Look at me! Look how high I am!" she shouted proudly.

"I see you, sweetheart!" I called back, standing up from the bench. "Be careful on the ladder!"

She slid down the spiral slide with a joyful squeal, landing in a soft pile of woodchips at the bottom. She scrambled to her feet, ran across the green grass as fast as her small legs could carry her, and threw herself directly into my arms.

I caught her effortlessly, lifting her high into the air as she giggled, her tiny hands wrapping tightly around my neck.

"Did you see me, Daddy?" she whispered against my ear.

My heart swelled with a warmth so profound it brought tears to my eyes.

May you like

It was the first time she had called me "Daddy" since the night she returned. She hadn't been forced or coached. The word had simply tumbled out of her naturally, filled with absolute trust and love.

"I saw you, my sweet girl," I whispered, pulling her close against my chest, burying my face in her soft, dark curls. "I saw you."
