Chapter 3 - The Boardroom Gambit

By 10:00 AM on Saturday, Mason was at Ethan’s sister’s house in Geneva, happily playing video games, blissfully unaware of the war erupting around him.
Ethan sat in a high-backed leather chair on the forty-second floor of a glass skyscraper in downtown Chicago. Across the wide oak conference table sat Marcus Vance, a veteran family law attorney with silver hair, sharp blue eyes, and a reputation for dismantling high-conflict custody suits with surgical precision. Beside Marcus sat Sarah Sterling, a forensic accountant and corporate litigation specialist whom Marcus had called in on an emergency retainer two hours ago.
The leather folder, along with copies of the financial documents Ethan had recovered, lay spread across the table between them.
"This is criminal extortion," Marcus said, his deep voice calm and measured as he reviewed the petition. "Julian Croft is using the threat of criminal prosecution to force Rachel to execute a fraudulent custody modification, aiming to leverage your real estate assets."
"Can he actually enforce this petition?" Ethan asked, leaning forward, his elbows resting on the table. "Can a judge take primary custody away from me based on these financial filings?"
"On these filings alone? No," Sarah Sterling chimed in, turning a page of her notepad. "These financial printouts show your income, but they’ve been doctored to make it appear as though you have over $200,000 in undisclosed offshore debt—debt that Julian's team artificially attached to your home equity through a shell corporation called Apex Management Group."
Ethan raised an eyebrow. "Apex Management Group? I've never heard of them."
"You wouldn't have," Sarah said, sliding a document across the table to him. "Apex is a Delaware LLC registered three months ago. The primary signature on the registration paperwork belongs to Julian Croft. He’s been setting up a paper trail to make it look like you took out a second, fraudulent mortgage on your Naperville property."
Ethan felt a cold sweat break out across his back. "He was trying to bankrupt me."
"He was trying to destroy your credibility in court," Marcus corrected smoothly. "In family court, if a judge believes a parent is engaging in massive, hidden financial fraud, primary custody is almost always transferred to the other parent immediately to protect the child's environment. Croft didn't just want your money, Ethan. He wanted you completely neutralized so you wouldn't have the legal standing or financial capital to fight back."
Ethan took a deep breath, staring out the floor-to-ceiling windows at the gray skyline of Lake Michigan. "So how do we stop him?"
"We don't just stop him," Marcus said, a cold, sharp smile playing at the corners of his mouth. "We trap him."
Marcus leaned forward, tapping his pen on the oak table. "If we file a police report right now, Julian will know the game is up. He’ll shred the physical documents at his firm, blame Rachel entirely for the missing funds, and use his corporate connections to tie you up in civil litigation for years. Rachel will go to prison, and Mason will be caught in the middle of a catastrophic public scandal."
"I don't care about Rachel's career," Ethan said firmly. "But I won't let Mason watch his mother get carried off to federal prison if she was manipulated into this."
"Agreed," Marcus said. "Which brings us to option two. Rachel has to cooperate with us. Fully. Completely. Without Julian knowing."
"She’s terrified of him, Marcus," Ethan said. "She thinks he holds all the cards."
"Then we show her that he doesn't," Sarah said, opening her laptop and turning the screen toward Ethan. "I’ve spent the last two hours running Apex Management Group through our corporate intelligence databases. Julian Croft isn't just stealing from his firm, Ethan. He’s been laundering money through three separate offshore accounts in the Cayman Islands for over two years—long before Rachel ever signed those billing invoices."
Sarah clicked a button, bringing up a complex flowchart of wire transfers. "Rachel isn't his accomplice. She’s his fall guy. He’s been setting her up since the day he brought her onto that account."
Ethan stared at the screen, the full scope of Julian’s depravity becoming crystal clear. Rachel hadn't just made a mistake; she had been systematically hunted by a predator who saw her vulnerable personal life—a recent divorce, a shared child, a trusting nature—as the perfect shield for his own corporate crimes.
Ethan stood up from the conference table, buttoning his jacket.

"Where are you going?" Marcus asked.
"To Rachel's apartment," Ethan replied, his voice deadly quiet. "It's time to show her who she’s really dealing with."
