Chapter 3 - The Unraveling EmpireThe news sent shockwaves through the global financial markets. By noon, headlines across Bloomberg, Forbes, and The Wall Street Journal read: VOLKOV GLOBAL IN TURMOIL: ASHCROFT HEIR REVOKES CEO VOTING RIGHTS FOLLOWING PUBLIC SCANDAL. Volkov Global stock dropped nine percent in four hours as rumors of internal financial irregularities began to circulate.

Damian sat in the opulent library of his suite at the St. Regis, staring blankly at three glowing smartphones lining the glass coffee table. All three were ringing incessantly—calls from panicked board members, angry European investors, and desperate public relations executives.
Selena stood near the window, pacing back and forth with a glass of white wine in her hand, her voice shrill with anxiety.
“My legal team says she can actually do this, Damian!” Selena shouted, turning toward him with wide, panicked eyes. “That old contract her father made you sign in 2018—it’s airtight! Harrison Ashcroft tied every single dollar of his foundation’s money to a strict moral covenant. If you cause a public scandal, she can freeze your voting shares for up to ninety days while auditing the company!”
“Shut up, Selena!” Damian roared, slamming his fist onto the mahogany table so hard his glass rattled. He stood up, his eyes bloodshot, his tailored suit rumpled. “She’s bluffing! She’s hurt because of the gala! She’s acting out of emotional revenge. In a couple of days, when she realizes how lonely that penthouse is, she’ll come to her senses. She loves me. She’s been devoted to me for three years!”
“She doesn’t look like a woman who loves you, Damian,” Selena said bitterly, taking a sharp sip of wine. “She looked like an executioner.”
Damian gritted his teeth, grabbing his personal phone. He dialed Vivian’s private number.
“The number you have dialed is currently unavailable or has been restricted...”
He slammed the phone onto the couch. “She blocked my number.”
At that exact moment, his personal secretary, Thomas, burst into the hotel suite without knocking, his face as white as paper.
“Sir... you need to see this,” Thomas stammered, handing a tablet over to Damian.
Damian grabbed it. It was a live broadcast of a press conference being held at the Ashcroft Foundation headquarters in Midtown.
Vivian stood behind a podium covered in micro-phones. She wore a striking ivory dress, simple, elegant, and regal. Behind her stood Carolyn Vance and three senior forensic accountants from the Securities and Exchange Commission.
Damian’s heart sank into his stomach.
“Good afternoon,” Vivian said into the microphones, her voice clear, calm, and utterly composed. “Over the past twelve hours, significant questions have been raised regarding the management and ethical alignment of Volkov Global. As the primary trustee of the Ashcroft Estate, which holds the controlling equity interest in Volkov Global, I am announcing today a comprehensive restructuring of the board of directors.”
A reporter raised his hand frantically. “Mrs. Volkov! Is this action directly related to the video of your husband and Selena Maro at the gala last night?”
Vivian paused, looking directly into the camera lens. For a fraction of a second, Damian saw a flicker of profound sorrow deep in her eyes—the remnant of the love she had once held for him. But it vanished as quickly as it came, replaced by absolute, unwavering resolve.
“The events of last night merely highlighted a systemic lack of accountability at the highest level of leadership,” Vivian replied smoothly. “Effective immediately, Mr. Damian Volkov has been placed on indefinite administrative leave. Furthermore, our preliminary audit has uncovered unauthorized offshore transfers amounting to forty-two million dollars from the Ashcroft Offshore Charitable Reserve to shell entities in the Cayman Islands registered under the name of Maro Holdings.”
Damian’s jaw dropped. He turned around like a wild animal and glared at Selena. “What did she just say? Shell entities? Maro Holdings? What the hell did you do, Selena?!”
Selena dropped her wine glass. It shattered against the hardwood floor, dark red liquid spreading across the rug like blood. Her face turned pale, her mouth opening and closing without sound. “Damian... I... I thought we agreed that money would be used to prepay the European regulatory fees! I registered those accounts under my family name to speed up the approval process!”
“You transferred forty-two million dollars of Ashcroft trust funds without board approval?!” Damian screamed, lunging toward her, grabbing her by the shoulders. “Are you out of your mind?! That’s embezzlement! That’s fraud! She’s going to put us both in federal prison!”
“You signed off on those transfers, Damian!” Selena shrieked, shoving his hands off her. “You signed the authorization forms last month while you were at my apartment in the Hamptons! You didn’t even read what you were signing because you were so obsessed with closing the deal!”
Damian felt as though the floor beneath him had suddenly opened up, dropping him into an endless abyss.
He stared at the TV screen.
Vivian was continuing her address to the world. “The Ashcroft Trust will fully cover all outstanding liabilities to ensure that no employees or lower-tier shareholders lose a single dollar. We are appointing an interim CEO this afternoon to finalize the European merger under completely transparent conditions.”
She paused, taking a gentle breath, resting her left hand lightly over her lower abdomen—a subtle, unconscious protective gesture that Damian didn't even notice, but which meant everything to her.
“My father believed that true power is not measured by how loud a man can shout or how much attention he can command in a crowded room,” Vivian concluded softly. “True power lies in integrity, honor, and protecting those who trust you. Volkov Global will return to those principles.”
She stepped away from the podium and walked off the stage, surrounded by her legal team, leaving the press room in total, deafening uproar.

Damian fell back onto the velvet sofa, his hands shaking violently. He looked at Selena, who was already on her phone, crying and yelling at her defense lawyer.
He had built an empire. He had believed he was a king, unstoppable and invincible. And in less than twelve hours, the quiet, gentle woman he had dismissed as merely a decorative accessory had torn his world down to the foundation stones, without raising her voice once.
