Chapter 4 - The UnravelingThe reaction in the boardroom was instantaneous.

One of the lead institutional investors stood up so fast his leather armchair tumbled backward against the floor-to-ceiling glass. "What the hell is the meaning of this, Vance?!"

Richard Vance’s face drained of all color. He looked down at the silver pen in his hand as if it had suddenly turned into a strike-snake. He opened his mouth to speak, to offer some smooth, corporate defense, but the audio tape played the exact ledger numbers, bank routing codes, and secret password phrases he had shared with Evelyn in the garden cottage.

"You..." Daniel breathed, turning on his godfather with a sudden, wild fury that I had never seen in him before. "You set me up! I trusted you! My father trusted you for thirty years!"

"Daniel, sit down and keep your mouth shut," Richard hissed under his breath, his composure finally snapping into sharp, aristocratic malice. "You signed those papers willingly because you were too arrogant to read the fine print! You wanted to play CEO, you little fool! You were so eager to prove you were smarter than your father that you handed me the keys to the entire vault!"

Daniel looked like he had been struck by lightning. The harsh, ugly truth hit him with full force: Richard hadn't considered him a brilliant young executive; he had considered him a useful idiot. And Evelyn had traded her own son’s future for a life of luxury with her lover.

Before Richard could touch the documents on the table, the heavy oak doors of the boardroom swung open once again.

This time, it wasn't lawyers who walked in. Four plainclothes detectives from the State Police Financial Crimes Division, accompanied by two uniformed officers, stepped into the room. Behind them walked Arthur Calloway.

Arthur looked ten years older than he had twenty-four hours ago. His shoulders were slumped, his face was drawn, but his eyes were filled with a cold, absolute clarity.

"Richard Vance," the lead detective announced, pulling a pair of steel handcuffs from his belt. "You are under arrest for grand larceny, corporate fraud, conspiracy to commit wire theft, and interstate financial treason."

Richard looked around the room—at the furious investors, at the police officers, at the digital screen still playing his recorded confession, and finally at Arthur, his partner of three decades.

"Arthur..." Richard stammered, his bravado finally collapsing. "Arthur, work with me. We can settle this privately..."

Arthur didn't say a word. He simply raised his hand and pointed toward the door as the officers stepped forward, grabbed Richard’s arms, and yanked them behind his back, snapping the steel cuffs around his wrists.

As Richard was led out of the boardroom in disgrace past thirty whispering employees, Arthur turned his gaze slowly toward his son.

Daniel took a step toward his father, his hands shaking. "Dad... Dad, I'm so sorry. I didn't know... I thought I was protecting the company..."

Arthur looked at Daniel with a look of profound, devastating sadness. "You didn't protect anything, Daniel. You were so busy acting like a king and treating the girl who actually cared about you like dirt that you walked straight into a slaughterhouse. You're removed from the board effective immediately."

"Dad! No! Please!" Daniel pleaded, tears streaming down his face as his father turned his back on him.

Arthur walked past his son, stopping right in front of me. The old man looked down at my bruised cheek, his eyes swimming with genuine remorse.

"Maya," Arthur said softly, his voice thick with emotion. "I cannot apologize enough for what happened in my house last night. I was blind to my wife's cruelty, and I raised a son who failed the most basic test of manhood. If there is anything left of my estate after the lawyers finish with this mess, I will ensure you are compensated for every ounce of suffering they caused you."

"I don't want your money, Arthur," I said gently, looking him straight in the eye. "I just want my life back."
