Chapter 4 - The Legal Disassembly

The fallout over the next forty-eight hours moved with the speed of a clinical intervention. Miguel didn't pack his bags and run away; instead, he called in backup of a different kind.
Using the financial records and digital breadcrumbs inadvertently exposed during Diego’s botched livestream, Miguel’s legal counsel—a sharp corporate attorney recommended by one of Miguel’s high-profile highway accident survivors—secured an emergency freeze on the family real estate trust within fourteen hours of Christmas Day.
By Tuesday afternoon, a process server handed formal legal notices to Raúl and Marta at their kitchen table. The documents detailed forensic accounting audits, claims of elder manipulation, and civil fraud charges regarding the clandestine transfer of property deeds.
Diego’s online empire collapsed almost as fast as it had been built. Once the unedited livestream clip of him throwing water on an infant—followed immediately by the audio recording of the financial scam—went viral on TikTok and X (formerly Twitter), his brand sponsors dropped him within six hours. Fitness brands severed contracts, tech gear companies recalled promotional items, and his follower count plummeted by over one hundred thousand accounts in a single day as outraged parents and ethics watchdogs flooded his comment sections.
Marta tried calling Miguel’s phone twenty times a day. When he didn't answer, she showed up at his and Paola’s apartment in downtown Guadalajara, weeping theatrically on the doorstep.
Paola opened the door just enough to look at her mother-in-law without letting her step inside. Emiliano was playing happily on the living room rug, cooing at a wooden rattle, completely safe and warm.
"Mija, please," Marta sobbed, wringing her hands. "We made mistakes. Diego is ruined—his accounts are banned, his friends have abandoned him, and your father is beside himself. Family is family. You can't destroy us over a financial dispute and a silly mistake with water!"
"It wasn't a mistake, Marta," Paola said calmly, her voice steady and empowered. "It was who you've always been. You just finally forgot to turn the camera off."
"Miguel! Talk to your mother!" Marta cried out toward the hallway.
Miguel walked to the door, buttoning a clean shirt as he prepared to head out for his shift at the station. He looked at the woman who had raised him to be a second-class citizen in his own family, prioritizing his brother's golden-child status while treating his life as disposable.

"The real estate trust will be restored to an independent administrator appointed by the court," Miguel said evenly. "Every cent you and Dad diverted will be returned to the collective family fund. And Diego will have to find a real job for the first time in his life. We are done, Mom. Do not come back here."
Marta stared at her son, realizing with terrifying finality that the quiet, compliant paramedic she had controlled for three decades was gone forever. She turned and walked down the apartment stairs without another word.
