Chapter 5 - The Collapse of an Empire

For three seconds, absolute silence fell over the pier, broken only by the rhythmic crashing of lake water against the concrete seawall. Gregory’s face drained of every drop of color, his mouth opening slightly as his eyes darted from me to Dominic, finally recognizing the man whose signature was stamped on the underground financial ledgers he had been embezzling from for years.

"Dominic..." Gregory choked out, his voice suddenly small, pathetic, and stripped of all its corporate arrogance. "I... I didn't know she was with you. If I had known—"

"If you had known what?" Dominic interrupted, taking another slow step closer. "That your petty domestic cruelty was pointed directly at my primary financial auditor’s sister? Or did you honestly believe you could bleed my accounts and brutalize a woman in this city without answering to anyone?"

"It's a misunderstanding!" Gregory stammered, backing away until his thighs hit the bumper of his Audi. His hands shook violently as he tried to reach into his coat pocket. "We can settle this. I have liquidity—millions in offshore holdings—"

Before Gregory’s fingers could clear his coat pocket, Dominic moved with terrifying, blinding speed. In a single fluid motion, Dominic closed the distance, grabbed Gregory by the lapels of his expensive cashmere overcoat, and slammed him hard against the side of the car. The metal frame groaned under the impact.

"Don't reach for anything," Dominic hissed, his face inches from Gregory’s terrified eyes.

From the shadows around the pier, four black tactical SUVs emerged with their high-beams blazing, surrounding the Audi and trapping Gregory in a wall of glaring white light. Doors slammed open simultaneously, and six of Dominic’s elite security operatives fanned out, securing the perimeter and cutting off any possible escape.

I walked slowly toward them, my boots crunching against the wet gravel. I stopped two feet away from Gregory, looking down at the man who had reduced my world to four locked walls.

"You told me no one would ever want my body," I said quietly, my voice carrying the weight of every tear I had shed on that cold floor. "You told me I was broken, invisible, and trapped."

Gregory struggled against Dominic’s grip, his face purple with panic and rage. "Victoria, please! Tell him! We were going to get married! We loved each other!"

I reached out, not to strike him, but to slowly, deliberately unbutton the top button of his expensive overcoat—the exact coat he had worn while standing over me with a sneer.

"I'm not broken, Gregory," I whispered, stepping back. "I was just waiting for the right monster to tear you down."

Dominic released his grip abruptly. Gregory slumped against the side of the car, gasping for air, sliding down until his knees hit the wet, greasy concrete—the exact same posture I had taken when I collapsed at Dominic’s feet three weeks ago.

"The federal marshals are five minutes out," Dominic said, looking down at the shivering wreck of a man. "They have every bank transfer, every shell corporation document, and every encrypted text message you sent while trying to cover up your domestic assaults. Your assets are frozen. Your name is blacklisted across three continents."

Gregory looked up from the pavement, his eyes wide with the realization that his entire world had evaporated in less than an hour. He had nothing left.
