Chapter 6 - The Trial of Fire

Maeve didn't panic. Fear was a distraction, and she had spent her life learning to operate through noise and danger.

She retreated slowly back toward her suite door, her bare feet silent on the runner rug. She knew every inch of this wing now—every floorboard that creaked, every door that swung heavy.

Through the darkness at the end of the hall, a shadow materialized.

The figure was tall, lean, wearing a dark rain jacket with the hood pulled low. In his right hand, he held a small electronic device that hummed softly—a portable signal jammer designed to block cellular networks and wireless security systems.

It wasn't a burglar looking for silver. It was a professional team.

"Where is the girl?" a harsh, accented voice demanded in a low rasp.

Maeve didn't answer. She swung the heavy brass candlestick with all the strength in her shoulders, catching the man squarely across his forearm.

The jammer flew from his grip, shattering against the marble floor.

The man grunted in pain, stumbling back, but recovered instantly, lunging forward to grab her by the throat. Maeve twisted, bringing her knee up hard into his midsection. He gasped, dropping to his knees, but a second shadow appeared behind him from the staircase.

"Grab her!" the second man hissed.

Before the second intruder could reach her, the grand double doors at the end of the gallery crashed open with a sound like thunder.

A beam of blinding white light cut through the dark corridor.

Rafaele Conti stood in the doorway, framed by the rain blowing in from the lower terrace. Behind him was Marco, holding a dark, suppressed sidearm.

"Down!" Marco roared.

Maeve dropped flat onto the carpet.

A single, muffled shot echoed down the hall. The second intruder fell backward with a heavy thud, while the first man tried to scramble toward the balcony window. Rafaele crossed the distance in three long strides, grabbing the man by his jacket, slamming him face-first against the oak paneling, and pinning him to the floor with a knee to his spine.

"Where is she?!" Rafaele shouted, his voice wild with a terror Maeve had never heard in him before. "Where is my daughter?!"

Maeve pushed herself up from the floor, her chest heaving, hair falling into her face. "She's safe! She's in the closet in my room!"

Rafaele let Marco take control of the pinned intruder, turning instantly to face Maeve.

He grabbed her by the shoulders, pulling her close into the light of Marco’s flashlight. His hands were shaking as he scanned her face, her neck, her hands, checking for injuries with frantic, desperate speed.

"Are you hurt?" he asked, his voice cracking. "Did they touch you?"

"I'm fine," Maeve breathed, her hands resting against his damp shirt. "I'm fine, Rafaele. She’s safe."

Without a word, Rafaele pulled her tightly into his arms, burying his face into her neck. He held her with a fierce, crushing intensity that made it impossible to tell where his relief ended and his protection began. Maeve wrapped her arms around his back, feeling the wild, rapid pounding of his heart against her chest.

"Papa?" a small voice called out from the darkness of the doorway.

Lia stood there, wrapped in her wool blanket, holding her blue bear, looking out at the scene with big, curious eyes.

Rafaele broke the embrace, dropping to his knees instantly, and gathered Lia into his arms, lifting her off the ground as if she weighed nothing at all. He pulled Maeve into the circle of his arms with his free hand, pressing his forehead against hers in the dark, quiet corridor.

"It's over," Rafaele whispered against Maeve’s skin. "I promise you both... it's over."
