Chapter 2 - The Collapse of a Constructed Life

The hospital waiting room smelled of antiseptic and stale coffee. Ryan sat on a hard plastic chair, his phone buzzing incessantly in his coat pocket. Amelia. Five missed calls. Three text messages asking where he was, why the restaurant reservation was canceled, where the ring was.

He pulled the phone out, stared at Amelia’s face smiling on the lock screen from their vacation in Maui, and felt like he was looking at a stranger. That life belonged to a man who didn't know what love cost.

Grace sat across the aisle, holding Leo asleep in her lap while the two girls rested their heads against her shoulders. She looked frail, worn down by three years of silent sacrifice, working two jobs while carrying a terrifying medical secret entirely alone.

Ryan walked over, kneeling beside her. “Grace. I’m staying.”

“You have a life, Ryan. Amelia—she’s waiting for you. Go back to your high-rise apartment and your clean, organized world. Don’t pretend to care now.”

“I missed the first three years of their lives because I was a blind, arrogant fool,” Ryan said, his voice thick with remorse. “I am not going anywhere. And as for Amelia, I’m ending it tonight.”

He stood up, walked to the quiet corner of the corridor, and dialed. Amelia picked up on the first ring, her voice tight with fury and embarrassment.

“Ryan Christopher Miller, where on earth are you? Half my family is sitting at our table waiting for a proposal that has now made me a laughingstock!”

“Amelia, I’m sorry,” Ryan said steadily. “I can’t come back. I found my wife. I found my children.”

“Your what? Your ex-wife has been gone for three years! Are you insane?”

May you like

“Maybe I was,” Ryan replied, looking through the glass at Grace stroking her son’s hair. “Consider the engagement off, Amelia. I’m mailing the ring back. Goodbye.”

He hung up before she could scream another word, turning off his phone entirely. The artificial life he had built was gone. Now, he had to fight for the real one.
