Chapter 3 - THE WEB OF BETRAYALVictor’s hand hovered over the steel pipe for a split second before three red laser dots danced across his chest, courtesy of the tactical snipers positioned outside the broken second-story windows. He slowly raised his empty hands, stepping back until his spine hit the peeling paint of the brick wall.

“Daniel...” Amelia breathed, her voice cracking as she clutched her diamond engagement ring—the very ring he had placed on her finger less than twelve hours ago—as if it could somehow shield her from reality. “Daniel, listen to me. It’s not what it looks like. Victor... he forced me. He threatened my family, he said if I didn't help him access the corporate ledgers, he would—he would expose my past!”

Daniel stopped ten feet away from her. His expression was a terrifying mask of absolute calm.

“Your past, Amelia?” Daniel asked softly. “You mean the fact that your real name isn't Amelia Sterling, and that your father wasn't a diplomat in Geneva, but a convicted white-collar criminal who died in a federal penitentiary while serving time for embezzlement?”

Amelia’s face drained of every last trace of color. She staggered backward, her manicured fingers flying to her mouth. “How... how do you know that?”

“I run a multi-billion-dollar global conglomerate, Amelia,” Daniel said, taking another slow step forward. “Did you really think I didn't run a background check on the woman I was about to marry? I knew about your father. I knew about your mounting gambling debts in Monte Carlo. I knew you were drowning in two million dollars of unsecured loans from underground syndicates.”

She froze, her eyes widening in pure horror. “You... you knew? All of this time? Then why did you ask me to marry you?”

“Because I wanted to see how deep the rabbit hole went,” Daniel replied coldly. “I wanted to see who was feeding you internal proprietary data on our Asian tech acquisitions. And tonight, you gave me my answer.” He turned his gaze toward Victor, who was sweating profusely under the laser sights. “Your own brother. A family business of treason.”

Victor bared his teeth, a desperate, ugly sneer twisting his face. “You think you've won, Hayes? You think locking us up changes anything? The board hates you. Half the executive committee has already signed secret proxy agreements with our backers in Zurich. By Monday morning, Hayes Global will be split into pieces, and you’ll be sitting in front of a Senate committee answering questions about corporate tax evasion!”

Daniel didn't flinch. Instead, a slow, dangerous smile crept across his lips.

“Tax evasion?” Daniel tilted his head. “Victor, do you really think I didn't anticipate your little backdoor proxy agreements with Zurich?”

Victor’s sneer faltered. “What are you talking about?”

At that exact moment, the heavy steel warehouse doors behind them slid open with a loud metallic rattle. A tall, impeccably dressed woman in a charcoal tailored suit walked into the pier house, escorted by two federal agents carrying heavy cryptographic hardware cases.

It was Elena Rostova, senior director of the Department of Justice’s Financial Crimes Division.

“Good evening, Mr. Vance,” Elena said smoothly, flashing an official federal badge. “Special Agent Rostova, DOJ. Your secret offshore accounts in the Cayman Islands, the Swiss numbered trusts, and the shell company you registered under your dog’s name in Panama? They were seized by federal warrant thirty minutes ago.”

Victor’s knees buckled. He grabbed the edge of the workbench to keep from collapsing. “No... that’s impossible. We used encrypted routing through Estonia!”

“Estonia cooperates with federal extradition treaties, Victor,” Elena said, snapping her leather binder shut. “Just like your co-conspirators in Zurich, who handed over every single email, text, and voice recording linking your syndicate to the corporate sabotage of Hayes Global.”

Marcus stepped forward, clicking heavy steel handcuffs around Victor’s wrists with practiced efficiency, before doing the same to Amelia, who let out a high-pitched, pathetic sob as the cold metal locked around her slender wrists.

“Take them away,” Daniel ordered quietly.

As the federal agents hauled Amelia and Victor out into the cold rain, Amelia turned back one last time, her tear-streaked face twisted in agony.

“Daniel! Please! I loved you! At least some of it was real!”

Daniel didn't even look at her as she was pushed into the back of a black transport van. He simply turned his back, watching the rain wash away the last remnants of a lie that had nearly cost him everything.
