Chapter 2 - The Boardroom StormBy 11:45 a.m., the thirty-second floor of the Calloway Global Tower in downtown Los Angeles was buzzing with tension. Glass-walled conference rooms overlooked the city skyline, but nobody was looking at the view. Twelve senior board members sat around a massive mahogany table, murmuring nervously as they looked at tablet screens displaying the leaked photos from Matthew’s bedroom.

Arthur Calloway sat at the head of the table, looking like a king waiting to be crowned. Dylan, his arrogant twenty-eight-year-old son, sat beside him, tapping his gold pen against a leather folder.
"It’s clear," Dylan said loudly to the board members nearby. "Matthew has lost his mind. Five years of sleep deprivation have finally broken his judgment. He's sleeping with the domestic staff in the family estate. He's unstable, reckless, and a massive liability to our stock value."
"The board cannot tolerate this level of personal scandal," Arthur added smoothly, looking at his watch. "When the clock strikes twelve, I will move for a vote of no confidence and assume temporary control of the executive board."
Suddenly, the heavy glass double doors of the boardroom swung open.
Matthew Calloway walked in. He wore a crisp, dark navy Tom Ford suit, his tie perfectly knotted, his posture imposing and absolute. But he wasn't alone.
Walking beside him was Lucy. She wore a simple, elegant dark green dress that Mrs. Carmen had rushed to buy for her two hours prior, her hair styled neatly, her chin held high despite the thirty pairs of powerful eyes staring at her. Behind them walked Arthur Vance—the formidable corporate attorney who had represented Matthew’s family for decades.
The room went dead silent.
"Matthew," Arthur said, hiding his surprise behind a tight smile. "You brought... guests. I don't believe this meeting is open to junior domestic staff."
Matthew didn't take his seat at the far end. Instead, he walked straight to the center of the table, resting his hands flat on the polished mahogany.
"I brought my personal assistant and my chief legal counsel," Matthew announced, his voice carrying an effortless authority that instantly subdued the room. "Because before you take any vote regarding my leadership, there are a few facts that need to be put on the record."
Dylan laughed mockingly. "Personal assistant? Matthew, we have the security logs. She was hired forty-eight hours ago as a housemaid through an agency! You were caught red-handed in your bedroom with her at six in the morning!"
"That's correct," Matthew replied without a trace of embarrassment. "And do you know why she was in my room, Dylan?"
Matthew turned to look at the twelve board members, his eyes locking onto each of them one by one. "For five years, every person in this room knew I suffered from severe, treatment-resistant insomnia following the crash that took my parents. You all watched me work twenty-hour days. You watched me double our corporate valuation while operating on zero sleep. And some of you—specifically my uncle—tried to use that medical vulnerability to claim I was incompetent."
Arthur’s smile faltered slightly. "Matthew, this is emotional drivel—"
"Two nights ago," Matthew interrupted, raising his voice slightly, "Lucy arrived at my estate. Within hours, her presence—her voice, her ability to break the suffocating, silent isolation that has hung over my life since my parents died—did what twelve medical specialists and millions of dollars couldn't do. She helped me sleep for eight unbroken hours."
A collective murmur gasped through the board members. Several older investors looked at Matthew with genuine shock.
"The photos my uncle paid trespassers to take this morning don't show an orgy or a scandal," Matthew continued, stepping back to gesture toward Lucy. "They show a man who finally found peace in his own home. They show a security breach orchestrated by Arthur Calloway to stage a hostile takeover because he couldn't win on financial merit."
Arthur slammed his hand on the table. "This is absurd! You expect this board to believe some girl from New Mexico is a medical miracle?! You're using her to cover up your immorality!"
"No, Arthur," Arthur Vance, the attorney, stepped forward, opening a thick leather folder. "We are presenting the board with criminal charges. We have already filed formal complaints with the LAPD for illegal surveillance, breaking and entering, and blackmail against Vanessa Hale and Arthur Calloway. The security footage from the Bel Air estate shows Arthur’s operatives bribing a gate guard to enter the premises."
Dylan stood up, his face turning pale. "That's a lie!"
"It's on video, Dylan," Vance said coldly, sliding flash drives across the table to every board member. "Including high-definition audio of your father offering the guard fifty thousand dollars to let the photographers in."
The board members immediately plugged the drives into their tablets. Within seconds, the room was filled with the clear, recorded voice of Arthur Calloway bribing the security guard.
Arthur’s face turned from red to an unhealthy ash gray.
Matthew leaned down, looking his uncle directly in the eye. "You tried to use a girl who has more integrity in her little finger than you've had in your entire life to destroy me. But all you did was expose your own desperation."
Matthew looked at the board. "I motion for an immediate vote to strip Arthur Calloway and Dylan Calloway of their board seats and freeze their voting shares pending criminal investigation."

"Seconded!" three major investors shouted almost simultaneously.
Lucy stood beside Matthew, watching as the powerful men who had tried to intimidate her hours ago scrambled to defend themselves against a wall of evidence. She looked at Matthew’s profile—strong, sharp, and resolute—and felt a strange, warm flutter in her chest that had nothing to do with fear.
