Chapter 2 - The Shadows of GoldThe leather interior of the Maybach was suffocatingly quiet. I sat pulled tightly against the passenger door, my fingers twisting the hem of my thin jacket while the rain began to slick the dark streets of Chicago. Beside me, Vincent DeLuca scrolled through a encrypted tablet, his profile carved from stone.

"You paid her bill," I said, my voice barely above the hum of the engine. "Why?"

"Because you were spending your sleep hours calculating medical debt instead of resting," Vincent replied without looking up. "It was an inefficient use of your time."

"It wasn't your responsibility!"

Vincent finally turned his head, setting the tablet aside. "Emily, nothing in this city happens without my permission. That includes you drowning under a system designed to crush people like you." He leaned in closer, his gray eyes locking onto mine. "And I don't like seeing what belongs to my attention get crushed."

"I don't belong to you," I shot back, though my chest hammered.

"Not yet," he said softly, a dangerous, intoxicating promise in his baritone.

The car pulled into the underground garage of the Grand Penthouse on Michigan Avenue. Within minutes, I was swept up a private elevator directly into a world of soaring glass walls, soft cashmere throws, and a panoramic view of Lake Michigan raging under the storm.

A silver tray of hot broth, handmade pasta, and braised beef was set before me by a stoic house manager who treated me with the exact same deference she gave Vincent. I hadn't eaten a full meal in two days. Despite my anger, I ate—and Vincent sat across from me, sipping scotch, simply watching me with an intensity that made my skin hum.

"Tyler wasn't wrong about one thing," I whispered, setting my fork down as tears threatened again. "The internet... they're calling me a charity case. They're posting my old pictures. They're making memes about the 'Mob Boss and the Kitchen Help.'"

Vincent set his glass down with a heavy snap. "Let me show you how I handle public opinion."

He gestured to his lieutenant, Leo, who stepped forward with a laptop. Vincent turned the screen toward me. On it was a live feed of Tyler’s private social media accounts, along with his firm’s internal servers.

"Tyler Vance’s firm relies heavily on offshore investors," Vincent explained calmly. "Investors who happen to answer to my board of directors. At 8:00 PM tonight, he thought humiliating you made him powerful. By 8:00 AM tomorrow, his line of credit will be frozen, his luxury lease revoked, and his darling fiancée’s father will realize Tyler’s firm is under federal scrutiny."

I gasped. "You did that in an hour?"

"I did that in ten minutes," Vincent corrected, stepping behind my chair and placing his hands lightly on my shoulders. His touch sent a spark down my spine. "Nobody uses you as a footstool to lift themselves up, Emily. Not while I breathe."

Before I could answer, his phone buzzed violently. Vincent glanced down, his jaw tightening into a sharp angle.

"Stay here," he ordered, his warm tone instantly turning to steel. "Leo will guard the door."

"Vincent, what's wrong?"

"A ghost from the past," he replied coldly, buttoning his jacket as he walked toward his private study. "It seems your ex wasn't the only one watching us tonight."
