Chapter 5 - Awakening the Storm

The confrontation was meticulously set for Friday morning during Ethan’s scheduled visit with the hospital administrator. Marcus had ensured that not only Dr. Vance, but also two high-ranking detectives from the financial crimes and homicide divisions, were waiting in the adjoining consultation room, accompanied by my mother and brother, who had finally been brought into the loop with irrefutable proof of Ethan's plot. Ethan walked into my room looking impeccably tailored, wearing his signature smug smile, completely unaware that the trap had snapped shut.
“Good morning, darling,” Ethan purred, leaning down to press a cold, perfunctory kiss against my cheek. “The paperwork is all set. We can finally put this tragic chapter behind us and move forward.” He straightened up, turning toward the door as he expected the hospital administrator to enter with the final transfer papers. Instead, the door swung wide open to reveal not hospital bureaucrats, but Marcus, my mother, and two police officers in full uniform, flanked by Dr. Vance carrying my complete, updated neurological charts.

Ethan’s composure fractured instantly, the color draining entirely from his handsome face as his eyes darted from the badge on the lead detective's chest to my mother’s tear-streaked, furious expression. “What is the meaning of this?” Ethan stammered, his polished voice cracking slightly at the edges. “This is a private medical facility! You have no right—'”
“He has every right, Ethan,” a voice cut through the sterile air, steady, clear, and resonant. It was my own. It was rough from disuse and laced with a cold, unforgiving fire, but it filled the room with undeniable authority. I turned my head slowly on the pillow, my eyes locking directly onto his with a gaze so piercing it made him recoil. Ethan stumbled backward, tripping over the edge of the visitor's chair as the realization crashed down upon him: the woman he thought was buried in a silent, endless sleep had woken up, and she had remembered every single word.
