Chapter 5 - Rebuilding from the Ashes

Spring arrived in the coastal town of Kennebunkport, Maine. The brutal winters had given way to warm ocean breezes, blooming wild roses, and the steady, soothing crash of waves against the rocky shore.
Standing on a bluff overlooking the Atlantic Ocean was a magnificent, three-story stone estate. It wasn't the cold, sterile marble mansion where Nathan had grown up, nor was it a corporate trophy asset. It was a home filled with light, wide wooden porches, and large windows that let in the sound of the sea.
Grace stood on the back porch, holding a warm cup of coffee, watching five-year-old Lily run across the manicured green lawn. Lily was wearing a bright yellow sundress, her loud, bell-like laughter echoing in the morning air as she chased a golden retriever puppy through the grass.
"She's getting fast," a voice spoke from behind her.
Grace turned to see Nathan walking out onto the porch. He was dressed casually in a soft grey sweater and jeans—a stark contrast to the stiff, armored executive suits he used to wear every day of his life. He wrapped his arms around Grace's waist from behind, resting his chin gently on her shoulder.
"She gets that from her mother," Grace murmured softly, leaning back against his broad chest. "She spent five years running."
"No more running," Nathan said, kissing the soft spot behind her ear. "Never again."
Life over the past six months had been a quiet process of healing and rebuilding. Nathan had officially stepped down as active CEO of Cole Enterprises, appointing Richard Hale and a trusted board of ethics directors to oversee the day-to-day operations while he transitioned the company into a philanthropic global enterprise.
Grace had completed her physical therapy; her shoulder had healed completely, leaving only a faint, silver scar—a reminder of the battle she had fought and won for her child. More importantly, the night terrors that had plagued Lily for months had finally faded, replaced by the secure, unwavering presence of a mother and father who loved her beyond measure.
"Nathan," Grace said softly, turning in his arms to face him. "Do you ever look back? Do you ever regret leaving the city? Leaving the empire?"
Nathan looked down at her, his amber eyes deep and warm. He reached up, gently tucking a strand of dark hair behind her ear.
"An empire built on lies is just a prison with gold bars, Grace," he said sincerely. "I didn't lose anything when I left New York. I found everything I ever wanted right here, on the day you walked back into my life."
He pulled a small, velvet-lined box from his pocket and held it out between them.
Grace’s breath caught in her throat.
Nathan dropped slowly to one knee on the wooden boards of the porch. The ocean breeze blew his dark hair across his forehead as he looked up at her with an open, vulnerable heart.
"Five years ago, I bought a ring," Nathan said, opening the box to reveal a breathtaking, ethically sourced diamond ring that shimmered like sunlight on ocean water. "I carried it in my pocket for months after you disappeared, refusing to let it go because letting it go meant accepting that you were truly gone. I spent years thinking I would never get the chance to say these words to you."
Grace swallowed hard, tears pooling in her eyes, her hands trembling as she brought them to her mouth.
"Grace Bennett," Nathan said, his voice thick with emotion. "You are the strongest, most brave, and most beautiful woman I have ever known. You fought through hell to protect our daughter, and you saved my soul when I was completely lost. Will you make me the happiest man alive? Will you marry me?"
"Daddy!"
Lily came sprinting up the porch steps, the golden puppy tumbling behind her. She slid to a halt beside Nathan, looking at the shiny ring, then at her mother's tear-stained face.
"Is Mommy crying because she's happy?" Lily asked innocently, tilting her head.
Grace let out a wet, breathless laugh and dropped to her knees beside Nathan and Lily, pulling them both into a tight, warm embrace.

"Mommy is so happy, Lily," Grace whispered, looking into Nathan's eyes. "Yes, Nathan. A thousand times, yes."
Nathan slid the ring onto her finger, pulling her into a deep, passionate kiss as Lily giggled, wrapping her small arms around both of their necks while the puppy barked happily around their feet.
