Chapter 3 - THE ALLIANCE OF THE DESPERATETwo hours later, inside a heavily tinted Maybach parked three miles down the coastal road outside the estate gates, Julian Harrington paced the length of the leather interior, his cell phone pressed tightly to his ear.

“What do you mean he locked you out?!” Julian shouted into the phone, his face red with fury. “Brooke, I told you to play the victim! I told you to cry, to apologize, to make him think it was just wedding stress!”
“Shut up, Julian! Just shut up and listen to me!” Brooke hissed back through the burner phone, whispering frantically from inside her dressing room closet. “He knows everything! He heard me threaten Natalie, he knows about the keycard, and worst of all... he mentioned the three million dollars transferred from Mother Catherine’s trust to your offshore accounts in Panama!”
Julian stopped pacing. The color drained from his face.
“He... he knows about Panama?” Julian whispered, the arrogance evaporating from his voice instantly, replaced by pure, unadulterated panic. “How could he know? That account was encrypted through three separate shell companies in the British Virgin Islands!”
“Because he’s Dominic Mercer, you absolute idiot!” Brooke spat back tears of rage. “He doesn't just run businesses, he runs an intelligence network! If we stay here another twelve hours, his security team won't just escort us off the property—they’ll hand us over to federal prosecutors on a silver platter, or worse, drop us in the Atlantic!”
“We need to move,” Julian said, his brain racing through emergency escape protocols. “Pack the bearer bonds, the passport duplicates, and the hard drives from your vanity. Meet me at the private helipad at Newport State Airport in forty minutes. I’ve already contacted our shipping contacts in Boston; we can catch a container freighter out of Narragansett Bay by tonight.”
“And the wedding?” Brooke asked bitterly, a dark, venomous hatred twisting her features. “Just give up? Let that snaring maid and that whining sister win?”
“If we’re in federal prison, winning doesn't matter, Brooke!” Julian snapped. “Get moving. Now!”
The line went dead.
Brooke threw the burner phone onto her dressing table, her chest heaving as she ripped open the hidden floorboard beneath her wardrobe. Inside sat a heavy steel lockbox containing four hundred thousand dollars in cash, forged passports under aliases, and the physical bearer bonds they had quietly siphoned from Catherine Mercer’s estate accounts over the past six months.
She hauled the heavy metal box out, setting it on the velvet chair. She began dumping diamond necklaces, gold Rolexes, and legal certificates into a leather duffel bag with frantic, shaking hands.
She was so consumed by her packing that she didn't hear the soft, deliberate click of her bedroom door unlocking.
“Leaving so soon?” a voice asked from the doorway.
Brooke screamed, dropping a diamond tennis bracelet onto the hardwood floor as she whipped around.
Standing in the doorway was Emma Collins.
The quiet maid wasn't wearing her apron or her service uniform anymore. She wore a simple charcoal trench coat, and her hands were tucked calmly into her pockets. But it wasn't Emma’s clothes that made Brooke’s blood run cold—it was the two armed private security guards standing silently in the hallway behind her, their submachine guns pointed downward with professional, unyielding precision.
“You...” Brooke choked out, backing away until her thighs pressed against the edge of the vanity table. “You’re just a maid! What are you doing in my room? Get out before I have you arrested!”
Emma walked slowly into the room, her eyes sweeping over the open lockbox, the piles of cash, and the forged passports spread across the bed.
A faint, knowing smile touched Emma’s lips.
“Arrested by whom, Brooke? The police you and your brother have been bribing for the last three years?” Emma shook her head, stepping closer. “You really didn't know, did you?”
Brooke glared at her, her voice trembling with venom. “Know what? What are you talking about?”
“You thought I was just a quiet girl who cleaned up coffee spills and scrubbed marble floors,” Emma said softly, stopping two feet away from the terrified bride-to-be. She reached up, unpinning her hair and letting the dark strands fall naturally around her shoulders, while her posture shifted instantly from submissive employee to someone possessing absolute, undeniable authority. “My name is Emma Mercer-Vance. Dominic is my cousin. And I’ve been running internal compliance for Walton-Mercer Global Logistics for five years.”
Brooke’s jaw dropped so low it looked like it might unhinge. “You’re... you’re family? You’re a Mercer?”
“I was placed in this household six months ago when Dominic first flagged suspicious wire transfers originating from Catherine’s trust,” Emma explained calmly, gesturing toward the cash on the bed. “We didn't need to guess whether you were stealing from us, Brooke. We just wanted to see how much rope you’d hang yourself with before we kicked the chair out from under your feet.”
Brooke let out a strangled cry of pure rage. With a sudden, desperate lunge, she grabbed a heavy crystal perfume bottle from the vanity and hurled it straight at Emma’s head.
Emma didn't even flinch. She simply tilted her head an inch to the left, letting the heavy crystal shatter against the wall behind her.
At a nod from Emma, the two armed security guards stepped into the room in a blur of motion. Before Brooke could scream, one of them clamped a heavy hand over her arm while the other zip-tied her wrists securely behind her back.
“Let me go!” Brooke shrieked, kicking and thrashing wildly like a trapped cat. “You can't do this! I’ll sue you! I’ll ruin all of you!”
“Save your breath, Brooke,” Emma said, turning toward the door as guards hoisted the struggling woman off her feet. “Julian is already waiting for you at the airport. Except he won't be catching a freighter to Europe.”
May you like
Emma paused at the doorway, looking back with a cold, unforgiving smile.
“He’ll be waiting in a federal holding cell. And by tomorrow morning, you’ll be joining him.”
