Chapter 4 - The Fall of AlbrightThe ballroom seemed to tilt on its axis.

Spencer Albright felt the air leave his lungs entirely. The crystal glass in his hand trembled so violently that water spilled over his knuckles, dripping onto his trousers.

"D-daughter...?" Spencer choked out, his voice a pathetic, high-pitched gasp. "Sole... heir...?"

Beside him, Patricia Albright looked as though she had been struck by lightning. Her face turned an ashen, ghostly grey, her mouth opening and closing like a fish out of water. Her hands clutched at her South Sea pearls so tightly that the string snapped, sending dozens of pale white spheres scattering across the wooden floor around her feet.

"No..." Patricia whimpered, stumbling backward into her chair. "No... that's impossible... she was a nobody... she said her family lived in the Midwest... she washed my dishes..."

Cassandra stared at the stage, her mouth agape, her eyes darting between the breathtaking black gown Gwen was wearing and her own emerald dress. The diamond earrings dangling from Cassandra's ears suddenly felt like burning lead against her skin.

On stage, Gwen did not smile. She stood beside her father, looking down at the eight hundred most powerful people in California, her expression entirely unreadable.

"Over the past six years," Arthur Crawford’s voice echoed relentlessly through the high-caliber speakers, "Crawford Global has operated under a policy of silent investment in local West Coast enterprises. However, effective at six o'clock this evening, our board has authorized a complete, aggressive restructuring of all regional assets."

Arthur tapped his silver walking stick against the wooden stage floor—a single, heavy THUD that seemed to vibrate through the foundations of the building.

"We have identified several entities operating within this market that do not meet the moral, financial, or ethical standards of Crawford Global," Arthur stated coldly. "Those entities have been blacklisted. Their credit lines have been terminated. Their corporate assets have been seized under federal fraud discovery protocols. And their leadership will face immediate public accountability."

A wave of panicked murmuring broke out across the front-row tables. Corporate executives glanced at one another, frantically checking their phones.

In the back corner, Spencer’s phone vibrated violently in his pocket. Then it vibrated again. And again.

With trembling fingers, Spencer pulled out his phone.

The screen was flooded with urgent notifications:

TEXT FROM CFO: SPENCER! WE ARE FROZEN! Bank of America just revoked our twenty-million-dollar operating line! Payroll bounced! TEXT FROM GENERAL COUNSEL: FEDERAL AUDITORS JUST ENTERED THE HEADQUARTERS WITH A SEARCH WARRANT! THEY HAVE THE CAYMAN SHELL FILES! TEXT FROM BOARD CHAIRMAN: Emergency meeting called. You are officially removed as CEO effective immediately.

"No... no, no, no!" Spencer shrieked, dropping the phone onto the table as if it had caught fire. "This isn't real! This is a nightmare!"

He looked up toward the stage, but Gwen and Arthur were already walking off the platform, escorted by a dozen high-level security guards in dark suits.

"Spencer!" Cassandra screamed, grabbing his lapels, her voice rising into a panic-stricken shriek. "What is happening?! Is your company okay?! What about my jewelry?! What about our house?!"

"Shut up!" Spencer roared, shoving her away so hard she nearly stumbled over her emerald train. "SHUT UP!"

He turned and began marching frantically through the center aisle of the ballroom, shoving past shocked guests, ignoring the stares, ignoring the whispering, his eyes fixed on the private VIP room behind the main stage.

"Gwen!" Spencer screamed as he reached the carpeted corridor behind the stage. "GWEN!"

Four massive security operators—each wearing tactical earpieces and broad charcoal suits—stepped into his path, forming an impenetrable wall of muscle.

"Sir, step back," the lead operator said flatly.

"Get out of my way!" Spencer barked, his face twisted into a mask of pure, unadulterated desperation. "That is my wife! Gwen! GWEN! LOOK AT ME!"

The double doors of the private VIP suite opened slowly.

Arthur Crawford stepped out, holding his walking stick, flanked by Thomas and two senior federal prosecutors carrying leather document briefcases.

Gwen walked out behind them. She stepped past her father, stopping three feet from the security line, looking at Spencer through the row of tactical guards.

"Gwen!" Spencer wept, falling to his knees right there on the plush red carpet of the corridor. "Gwen, please! Oh my God, Gwen, I'm sorry! I didn't know! I swear to God I didn't know!"

Gwen looked down at him. There was no anger in her face. No rage. No vengeance.

Only a vast, terrifying void of absolute indifference.

"You didn't know what, Spencer?" Gwen asked softly, her voice cool and crystal clear. "You didn't know who my father was? Or you didn't know that striking a five-year-old child had consequences?"

"It was Cassandra!" Spencer stammered frantically, pointing a trembling finger back toward the ballroom where Cassandra was standing near the entrance. "She was the one who hit Hazel! I tried to stop her! You saw me! I was trying to protect Hazel!"

A faint, bitter smile touched the corner of Gwen's lips. "You adjusted your cufflinks, Spencer. You told me to control my child because she was ruining your night."

"I was stupid! I was confused! I love you, Gwen!" Spencer sobbed, reaching out his hands through the legs of the security guards, trying to grab the hem of her black silk dress. "We have a daughter together! Think of Hazel! We can be a real family now! We can use your father's resources to build an empire!"

Arthur Crawford stepped forward, the heavy brass tip of his walking stick coming down directly onto Spencer's right hand, pinning his fingers against the floor with crushing force.

Spencer howled in pain, pulling his hand back and clutching his bruised fingers to his chest.

"You don't speak my granddaughter's name," Arthur said, his voice dropping into a low, terrifying rumble that made Spencer shiver. "You don't speak my daughter's name. You are a fly, Spencer. A tiny, insignificant parasite that crawled onto my family's coat when we weren't looking."

Thomas stepped forward, opening one of the leather briefcases and pulling out a thick stack of legal documents. He tossed them onto the floor in front of Spencer's face.

"These are federal arrest warrants issued by the United States District Court," Thomas announced calmly. "Charges include wire fraud, corporate tax evasion, money laundering, and illegal offshore asset concealment totaling seventy-eight million dollars."

Spencer gasped, staring at the blue official seal on the documents. "No... no, I didn't... those were just offshore tax structures! Everyone uses them!"

"Everyone doesn't steal them from Crawford Global subsidiary funds, Mr. Albright," the federal prosecutor added, pulling a pair of steel handcuffs from his coat. "Spencer Albright, you are under arrest."

Before Spencer could process the words, two uniformed federal marshals stepped out from the side hallway, grabbed Spencer by his shoulders, hauled him to his feet, and snapped the cold steel cuffs around his wrists.

"Gwen!" Spencer shrieked as he was dragged backward down the hallway, his knees scraping against the floorboards. "GWEN! PLEASE! TELL THEM TO STOP! GWEN!"

Gwen didn't move. She didn't blink. She stood silently, watching her husband dragged away toward a waiting police vehicle.

Behind them, Patricia Albright rushed into the corridor, her broken pearls dangling from her hand, her eyes wild with terror.

"Gwen!" Patricia cried out, falling to her hands and knees in front of her former daughter-in-law. "Gwen, my darling! Please! Have mercy on us! I was hard on you, I know, but I'm an old woman! Don't let them take our house! Don't let them destroy my family!"

Gwen looked down at the woman who had spent six years calling her a freeloader, a peasant, and a worthless burden.

"Your house was foreclosed on at 6:00 p.m. tonight, Patricia," Gwen said softly. "The eviction team is currently packing your belongings into storage boxes on the street in Bel Air. You have until midnight to collect your personal clothing."

Patricia let out a guttural, pathetic wail, collapsing flat onto the red carpet, weeping into her velvet sleeves.

Gwen turned her back on the broken remains of the Albright family, walked back into the private VIP suite, and let the heavy doors close quietly behind her.
