Chapter 4 - The Iron FortressSurvival instinct, honed by years of protecting her child at all costs, took over Serena’s mind.

She didn't freeze. She didn't scream.
Seeing a heavy, metal fire extinguisher mounted on the pillar right beside her, Serena grabbed it, ripped it from the wall, and swung it with all the strength in her body.
The heavy cylinder struck the advancing gunman square in the side of his helmet, sending him crashing into the concrete floor. Before he could recover, Serena discharged the blinding white chemical foam directly into his face, blinding and choking him, while Vittorio lifted his pistol with trembling hands and neutralized the threat.
Seconds later, Vittorio’s primary security team broke through the ambush, clearing the remaining attackers and securing the area.
“Boss! Boss is hit!” the lead guard shouted into his radio. “Get the medic unit to the safehouse now!”
Two guards lifted the semi-conscious Vittorio into the bulletproof SUV. Serena rushed in right beside him, refusing to let go of his hand. Throughout the high-speed ride through the city streets, Serena pressed her velvet scarf against his wound, whispering furious, desperate words into his ear.
“Don't you dare die on me, Vittorio Rinaldi!” she sobbed, her hands soaked in his blood. “You promised me! You promised you would help me save Lucia! You promised you wouldn't leave! Stay awake!”
Vittorio looked up at her through heavy, pain-filled eyes, his hand feebly squeezing hers. “You... you hit a guy... with a fire extinguisher...” he managed to whisper, a faint, bloody smile tugging at the corner of his lips. “Feisty... nanny...”
“Shut up and breathe!” Serena commanded, tears streaming down her dusty, blood-stained cheeks.
By three in the morning, the Rinaldi estate had been transformed into an iron fortress. Armed guards line the iron gates every ten feet. The estate’s private medical suite was fully operational, with top surgeons working feverishly to extract the bullet from Vittorio’s side.
Serena stood in the hallway outside the medical room, still wearing her ruined, blood-soaked green gown. She refused to wash up. She refused to sit down. She paced back and forth like a wounded lioness.
A soft sound made her turn around.
Standing at the end of the long corridor were four small figures in red pajamas. Marco, Nico, Alessandro, and Tommaso were huddled together, clutching their blankets, their eyes wide with terrifying realization.
“Serena?” Marco’s voice was small, stripped of all its tough bravado. “Is... is Dad okay? Mrs. Chen said there was an accident.”
Serena felt her heart break into a thousand pieces. She wiped her face, swallowed her own terror, and walked over to them, kneeling on the hard floor despite her ruined dress. She opened her arms, and all four boys rushed into her embrace, clinging to her as if she were the only anchor left in a storm-tossed world.
“Your father is strong,” Serena whispered, kissing the tops of their dark heads. “He’s a fighter. The doctors are taking care of him right now. He’s going to be okay. I promise you.”
“We heard gunshots on the news,” Nico whimpered, burying his face in her shoulder. “We don't want Dad to die like Mommy died!”
“He isn't going to die,” Serena said fiercely, pulling back to look each of the four boys in the eye. “Listen to me. All four of you. Your father fought off bad men tonight to come back home to you. He loves you more than his own life. Right now, he needs us to be strong. No crying. No messing around. We stand together as a family. Can you do that for him?”
The four boys looked at Serena, then at each other. The bond that had been forming over the past few weeks suddenly hardened into solid rock.
“We can do it,” Marco said firmly, wiping a tear from his cheek. “We’re the Rinaldis.”
“And you’re our Serena,” Tommaso added quietly, wrapping his small arms around her neck.
At dawn, the surgeon stepped out of the room, pulling off his mask. He looked exhausted but relieved. “The bullet missed his vital organs by two centimeters. He lost a lot of blood, but he’s out of danger. He’s asking for Serena.”
Serena let out a massive breath she felt like she had been holding for hours. She turned to the boys. “Go to the kitchen with Mrs. Chen and get some breakfast. I’ll check on your dad.”
She walked into the dimly lit room. Vittorio lay in the hospital bed, hooked up to monitors, his chest bandaged tightly. He looked pale, but when he saw Serena enter, his eyes flared with immediate life.
“Serena,” he rasped, holding out his hand.
She walked quickly to his side, taking his hand in both of hers. “You idiot,” she whispered, laughing through her tears. “You almost got yourself killed.”
“I’ve survived three turf wars, Serena,” Vittorio murmured, his thumb gently caressing her knuckles. “I wasn't going to let a cheap Moretti bullet stop me from coming back to this house. To the boys... and to you.”
The air in the room grew heavy with unspoken emotions. Vittorio pulled her hand gently, bringing her closer until her face was inches from his.
“When I was lying on that concrete floor,” Vittorio whispered, staring deeply into her eyes, “I didn't think about my empire. I didn't think about money or power. I thought about your smile when the boys eat dinner. I thought about the way you look at me like I’m a man worth saving. Serena... I’ve been dead inside for three years. You brought me back to life.”
Serena’s heart slammed against her ribs. “Vittorio...”
“I love you, Serena,” Vittorio said, the powerful mafia boss speaking with raw, naked vulnerability. “Not as an employer. Not as a benefactor. I love you as a man who wants to spend the rest of his life protecting you and your daughter.”
Tears spilled over Serena’s cheeks, but this time they were tears of pure joy. She leaned down and pressed her lips softly, tenderly against his. The kiss was sweet, deep, and filled with the promise of a future forged in the middle of a storm.

When she pulled back, she smiled through her tears. “You better get well fast, then. The court hearing is in four days.”
Vittorio smiled, a dangerous, triumphant glint returning to his eyes. “Call my legal team. Tell them it’s time to destroy Richard Sterling.”
