Chapter 6 - A New DawnOne year later.

The morning sun rose warmly over the rolling green hills of Fort Liberty, North Carolina.
The parade field was filled with three thousand soldiers standing in pristine formation. Flags fluttered in the warm spring breeze, and brass music from the 82nd Airborne Division Band echoed across the grounds.
At the center podium stood the Commanding General of the XVIII Airborne Corps.
"Attention to Orders!" a loud voice boomed over the loudspeakers.
Rachel Bennett stepped forward, standing at rigid attention.
Abigail sat in the front row of the VIP bleachers, wearing a bright yellow sundress. Beside her sat Captain Marcus Reed, who had become a close, devoted friend and partner over the past year, holding her hand gently.
The Commanding General stepped up to Rachel, unpinning the three silver stars from her collar.
He replaced them with four brilliant, gleaming silver stars.
"For outstanding leadership, unyielding integrity, and distinguished service to the United States Army," the General announced, "Colonel Rachel Bennett is hereby promoted to the rank of General."
The entire field of three thousand soldiers snapped a crisp, thunderous salute.
The crowd erupted into roaring applause.
General Rachel Bennett saluted her commander, her face resolute, before turning to face the bleachers. Her eyes swept over the soldiers, the flags, the shining morning sky, and finally rested on her daughter.
Abigail stood up, clapping proudly, her face beaming with pure, radiant joy.
After the ceremony, as guests gathered on the lawn for refreshments, Rachel walked across the green grass toward her daughter.
Abigail ran forward, throwing her arms around her mother’s neck. "General Bennett! I’m so proud of you, Mom!"
Rachel laughed, holding her daughter tight, smelling the sweet scent of rain and flowers in her hair. "Thank you, Abby. But I couldn't have done any of this without you."
"You saved my life, Mom," Abigail whispered softly, pulling back to look into her mother’s eyes.
"No, Abby," Rachel said, touching her daughter’s cheek gently, where the bruises had long since healed, leaving only smooth, vibrant skin. "I just reminded you who you were. You saved yourself."
Marcus walked up, handing two glasses of sparkling lemonade to them both. "Congratulations, General. What are your orders now?"
Rachel looked at her daughter, at the bright horizon stretching out before them, filled with peace, freedom, and infinite possibility.

Rachel smiled—a warm, deep, beautiful smile that reached all the way to her eyes.
"My orders are simple, Marcus," Rachel said, raising her glass. "To live happily ever after."
