Chapter 5 - The Turning TideSix months later.

The spring air in Manhattan was warm and smelled of blooming magnolias and damp pavement.

In a private suite at Mount Sinai Hospital, the steady, rhythmic beep-beep of a heart monitor filled the sterile room. Outside the large glass window, the sun was beginning to dip below the skyline, painting the Hudson River in shades of gold and amber.

Isabella lay propped up against hospital pillows, exhausted, pale, but glowing with an ethereal, triumphant light. Cradled securely against her chest was a tiny, perfect baby boy, wrapped in a pale blue blanket, sleeping with his fists curled near his chin.

The door to the hospital room clicked open softly.

Isabella didn't need to look up to know who it was. The heavy, measured footsteps belonged to the man she had spent the last year legally and emotionally divorcing.

Lorenzo stopped at the foot of the bed. He wasn't wearing his usual tailored business suit; he wore a simple black button-down shirt with the sleeves rolled up, looking older, leaner, and profoundly humbled. He didn't rush forward. He kept his distance, his dark eyes fixed entirely on the small bundle in her arms.

“May I?” Lorenzo’s voice was barely a whisper, rough with unspoken emotion.

Isabella looked down at her son, then up at Lorenzo. She saw the absence of arrogance in his posture, the quiet surrender in his eyes. She slowly nodded.

Lorenzo walked around the bed, his movements careful and hesitant, as if he were approaching a wild animal that might bolt at any second. He knelt slowly beside the mattress, resting his large, calloused hands gently on the edge of the mattress.

Up close, the baby had Lorenzo’s dark, sweeping eyelashes, but the delicate curve of his jaw was entirely Isabella’s.

“What is his name?” Lorenzo asked, his voice shaking.

“Julian,” Isabella said softly. “Julian Vance.”

Lorenzo swallowed hard, a single tear breaking free and cutting a clean path down his cheek. He didn't wipe it away.

“Thank you for keeping him safe, Isabella,” Lorenzo whispered. “And... thank you for not letting me destroy him the way I nearly destroyed everything else.”

Isabella studied him for a long moment. The anger that had sustained her through the darkest months of her pregnancy had finally burned away into ash, replaced by a quiet, unshakeable strength. She hadn't forgiven him lightly, and the divorce was final, but she knew that true peace required closure, not eternal war.

“You’re welcome to be his father, Lorenzo,” Isabella said, her voice steady and clear. “Under our terms. On neutral ground. With complete honesty. No secrets, no hidden empires, and no lies.”

May you like

Lorenzo looked up, meeting her eyes with a fierce, unwavering vow.

“No more lies,” he promised.
