Chapter 8 - The Hammer Falls

The jury deliberated for a remarkably short duration—just under three hours. In the world of federal trials, a fast verdict in a complex white-collar and assault case almost always spelled disaster for the defense.
When the buzzer sounded, signaling a verdict had been reached, the courtroom filled with an electric, breathless silence.
Judge Vance took his seat, adjusting his glasses. "Has the jury reached a verdict?"
The foreperson, a stern-looking woman in a navy blazer, stood up. "We have, Your Honor. On Count One, Grand Larceny and Wire Fraud: Guilty. On Count Two, Conspiracy to Commit Corporate Embezzlement: Guilty. On Count Three, Aggravated Domestic Assault resulting in Serious Bodily Injury: Guilty. On Count Four, Child Endangerment: Guilty."
The gavel came down with a sharp, definitive crack that felt like freedom.
Guilty on all counts.
David didn't scream or thrash. He simply slumped forward in his chair, his head hitting the mahogany table with a dull thud as the marshals immediately stepped in, unlocking his table cuffs and replacing them with heavy steel wrist-chains.
Margaret, who had slipped into the back of the courtroom wearing dark sunglasses and a black scarf to avoid press cameras, let out a sharp gasp before fleeing through the double doors, abandoning her son to his fate once and for all.
Judge Vance addressed the court with cold, unyielding precision. "Mr. Sterling, you have systematically weaponized your position, your wealth, and physical violence to terrorize your family and loot corporate assets. The guidelines for these combined offenses call for severe federal penalties. Sentencing will take place in thirty days, but given the severity of the flight risk and violent nature of the offenses, bail is permanently revoked. Take him away."
As David was dragged out through the side door, casting one last desperate, pleading look in my direction that I completely ignored, a profound weight lifted off my shoulders.

My father wrapped his arm tightly around my shoulders, pressing a kiss to the top of my head. "It's over, sweetheart. He can never hurt you or Emma ever again."
"I know, Dad," I whispered, tears of pure relief finally spilling over my lashes. "I know."
