Chapter 5 - The Ledger of BloodNight fell again over the Briar Glen valley, but this time, Ethan didn't arrive as an accidental guest.

Three black SUVs tore through the iron gates of the Ashford estate, their high beams slicing through the fog. Ethan, accompanied by Marcus and four elite private security officers, stepped out onto the driveway. Behind them, two unmarked vans carrying independent forensic investigators idling quietly.
Vivian Ashford stood on the front portico, flanked by Sheriff Donald Peters—a corrupt, heavy-set man whose campaign had been funded by the Ashfords for fifteen years.
"Ethan Hale," Sheriff Peters shouted, unclipping the holster of his service weapon. "You're trespassing on private property. You step one foot closer, and I'll have you in cuffs."
Ethan didn't stop. He walked straight up the stone steps, throwing a fat stack of legal documents onto the hood of the sheriff's cruiser.
"That's an emergency court injunction signed by a federal judge in the Southern District of New York," Ethan announced, his voice echoing across the courtyard. "It grants independent forensic access to this estate based on evidence of multi-state wire fraud and illegal confinement."
Sheriff Peters hesitated, looking down at the official court seal on the papers. "This... this is nonsense."
"Read it, Sheriff," Ethan said coldly. "Or ignore it and become an accessory to federal crimes. Your choice."
Vivian’s face pale slightly, but she stood her ground. "Search all you want, Ethan. You'll find nothing."
Ethan walked past her, brushing her shoulder, leading his team straight into the grand library.
The library was massive, lined with thousands of leather-bound volumes. Ethan stood near the massive fireplace while Claire—wearing clean, elegant dark clothes provided by Ethan's team—stepped into the room behind him.
Sheriff Peters and Vivian followed them inside, tense and watchful.
Claire walked slowly toward the northern wall, her fingers tracing the carved mahogany shelves. She stopped at the third section from the left, reaching up to a specific set of encyclopedias. She pulled three volumes forward, revealing a subtle, tiny keyhole hidden behind the woodwork.
Vivian’s breath hitched.
Claire inserted the tarnished brass key she had kept hidden in her sweater for twenty years. She turned it.
A soft click echoed in the quiet room.
A panel in the bookcase popped open, revealing a dusty, steel-bound ledger alongside a stack of original financial deeds bearing the signatures of Claire’s late parents, Elizabeth and Arthur Bennett.
Claire pulled the ledger out and handed it directly to Ethan’s lead corporate attorney.
"This ledger documents every bank account, offshore trust, and property my father owned," Claire said, looking directly at Vivian. "Including the specific secondary account my aunt used to pay off local authorities to ignore my existence."
Sheriff Peters stepped back, his face turning gray. "Vivian... you told me this was just about an estate trust dispute."
"Shut up, Donald!" Vivian snapped, her aristocratic mask completely shattering. She turned on Claire, her eyes filled with poisonous rage. "You ungrateful little brat! We kept you alive! We fed you! We gave you a roof over your head for twenty years when we could have just—"
"When you could have killed me?" Claire interrupted, her voice steady and ringing with absolute power. "You tried to kill my soul, Aunt Vivian. But you failed."
"Sheriff," Ethan said, turning to the trembling officer. "Do your job. Or my legal team will ensure you share a cell with her."
Sheriff Peters slowly pulled out his handcuffs. "Mrs. Ashford... you need to come with me."
Grant Ashford tried to run out the back doors of the library, but Marcus was already standing in the doorway. With a swift movement, Marcus pinned Grant’s arms behind his back and clicked handcuffs onto his wrists.
As Vivian and Grant were led away through the grand hall in handcuffs, Vivian turned back to stare at Claire one last time.

"You have nothing!" Vivian screamed, her voice echoing pathetically. "You don't know how to live in this world! You're a ghost!"
Claire stood tall beside Ethan, holding her head high. "I'm not a ghost anymore, Vivian. I'm the owner of this house."
