Chapter 6 - The UnravelingThe arrest of Vivian and Grant Ashford sent shockwaves through the elite social circles of New York and the nation's news outlets. Within forty-eight hours, headlines across the country read: GHOST HEIRESS FOUND: The Twenty-Year Captivity of Claire Bennett.

Ethan Hale’s penthouse became a command center. While media outlets camped outside the building, Ethan brought in the country's best medical, legal, and psychological professionals to support Claire.
Sitting in Ethan's private office, Claire watched the news broadcasts on a massive wall screen. News anchors were breaking down the massive fraud network Vivian had built using the stolen Bennett trust funds.
"They're talking about me like I'm a tragic story," Claire said softly, staring at her own five-year-old childhood photo displayed on the screen.
Ethan walked over, setting two cups of fresh coffee on the desk. "You were a tragic story, Claire. But now you're the author of what happens next."
"They took twenty years, Ethan," she said, her voice dropping into a painful whisper. "I don't know how to drive a car. I don't know how to use a smartphone. I don't know how to navigate a world where people talk to each other through little glass screens. I feel like a creature pulled out of a time capsule."
Ethan sat across from her, looking at her with genuine respect. "In forty-eight hours, you've outmaneuvered a family that spent twenty years plotting against you. You don't need to know how to use a smartphone today, Claire. You have intelligence, instinct, and strength that most people in this city couldn't build in three lifetimes."
A soft knocking came at the office door. Eleanor Vance stepped inside, holding a thick file.
"We have a problem," Eleanor said grimly.
Ethan leaned forward. "What is it?"
"Vivian’s high-priced defense attorneys just filed a motion with the high court," Eleanor explained. "They are claiming that Claire is mentally unfit to stand as a witness or reclaim her estate. They're arguing that twenty years of isolation has left her with severe psychological trauma, making her testimony unreliable. They've requested a court-mandated psychiatric evaluation by a doctor chosen by Vivian's defense team."
Ethan’s eyes flared with anger. "They’re trying to declare her insane so her testimony gets tossed out."
"If the court grants this motion," Eleanor added, "the entire criminal case against Vivian could collapse, and the estate will remain frozen in probate for years."
Claire stood up slowly. Her posture was straight, her jaw locked in determination. "Who is the judge overseeing this motion?"
"Judge Richard Sterling," Eleanor replied. "He’s a strict, old-school federal judge. He doesn't like media circuses, and he strictly follows procedural law."
Claire looked at Ethan. "Can they force me to do this evaluation?"
"Not if we take the fight to them first," Ethan said, a slow, strategic smile spreading across his face. "We don't wait for their evaluation. We ask for a public hearing. In front of Judge Sterling. In front of the press. You tell your story directly to the court."

Claire took a deep breath. The thought of standing in a room full of strangers, bright lights, and cameras terrified her. But the thought of Vivian winning terrifies her more.
"Set the hearing," Claire said firmly. "I'm ready."
