Chapter 3 - The Gilded CageThe Vitali Estate was less of a house and more of a fortress disguised as a European palace. Nestled high on a cliff overlooking the grey, thrashing waves of Lake Michigan in Lake Forest, it was surrounded by ten-foot wrought-iron gates, security checkpoints, and manicured private grounds that stretched for miles.

The black SUV smoothly rolled to a stop beneath a grand stone portico. The driver opened the door, and Alessandro stepped out first, offering his hand to me. I ignored it, pulling my worn jacket tightly around myself as I stepped out into the chilly autumn air.
"This way," Alessandro said, his voice clipped and businesslike.
He led me through grand double doors made of carved oak into a foyer dominated by a sweeping marble staircase, soaring ceilings, and priceless oil paintings. The silence of the house was oppressive, broken only by the echo of our footsteps.
"Show Miss Vance to the East Wing guest suite," Alessandro commanded a middle-aged housekeeper in a crisp gray uniform who had appeared silently from a side corridor. "Ensure she has everything she needs. Food, fresh clothing, medical supplies if necessary."
"Medical supplies?" I blurted out, turning to him. "I don't need medical supplies, Alessandro. I need to go home. I need to check on Liam, and I need to go back to my life."
"This is your life now, until I decide otherwise," Alessandro said, stepping close to me. His height was intimidating, but it was his absolute composure that terrified me most. "Your friend Liam is currently being transported here under my security detail. He will be housed in the guest cottage near the gate. He is safe. You are safe. But you are not leaving this estate."
"You're holding me prisoner!"
"I am keeping you alive," he corrected sharply. "The O'Malley syndicate isn't a group of neighborhood bullies, Elizabeth. They are ruthless, desperate, and they operate in the dark. Your father took two million dollars from their money-laundering shell companies before his death. They don't want the money back—they know you don't have it. They want an example."
I swallowed hard, the cold truth of his words washing over me. I had known my father was in deep, but hearing the actual scope of it from Alessandro made the floor feel unstable beneath my feet.
"Why do you care?" I asked, my voice cracking with emotion. "If you think I'm a liar, if you think I used you at the hotel, why didn't you just throw me to Vance and walk away?"
Alessandro stared at me, his amber eyes darkening. He reached out, his long fingers hovering just inches from my cheek before he pulled his hand back, clenching it into a fist at his side.
"Because despite everything," he murmured, his voice laced with a dark, dangerous velvet tone, "you spent six hours in my arms, telling me things you've never told anyone else. And nobody takes what belongs to a Vitali—not even a shadow from your past."
"I don't belong to you!"
"We'll see," he said coolly. "Go to your room. Rest. An hour from now, my personal physician will be here to examine you."
Panic hit me like a physical blow. A physician.
"No!" I shouted, taking a step back. "No doctors! I don't need a doctor!"
Alessandro’s eyes narrowed into sharp slits. He was too smart, too perceptive. My overreaction was an immediate red flag.
"Why are you terrified of a simple routine checkup, Elizabeth?" he asked, stepping slowly toward me, his gaze tracking every micro-movement of my face. "You look exhausted, you're unnaturally pale, you almost fainted in the diner, and you flinched when food was mentioned. What aren't you telling me?"
"Nothing!" I lied wildly, my heart hammering against my ribs. "I just don't like doctors! After my parents died in the hospital, I can't stand them!"
It was a plausible lie, a piece of truth wrapped around a secret, but Alessandro didn't look completely convinced. He studied me for a long, agonizing moment before turning to the housekeeper.
"Mrs. Gable, take her upstairs. Delay Dr. Harrison’s arrival by two hours. Let her rest first."
"Yes, Mr. Vitali," the housekeeper bowed slightly.
I was escorted up the grand staircase and down a sprawling hallway lined with dark wood paneling and crystal sconces. Mrs. Gable opened the doors to a bedroom suite that was larger than Liam’s entire apartment. It featured a king-sized bed wrapped in white silk, a marble fireplace roaring with a warm fire, and a private balcony overlooking the stormy lake.
"I have placed fresh clothes in the wardrobe, Miss," Mrs. Gable said respectfully. "If you require anything, press the button beside the bed."
"Thank you," I whispered.
The moment the door closed behind her, I ran to it and turned the brass handle. Locked. From the outside.
"Damn it!" I squeezed my eyes shut, pressing my forehead against the cool wood.
I was trapped. In a golden cage, but a cage nonetheless. And in less than two hours, a doctor was going to arrive. They would draw blood, perform a routine exam, and the truth would be out. Alessandro Vitali would know that the woman he suspected of being a calculating blackmailer was carrying his child.
I walked over to the balcony doors and pushed them open. The cold wind from Lake Michigan whipped my hair around my face, biting into my skin. I looked down. It was a three-story drop onto solid stone pavers. No escape there.
I walked back into the lavish room, pacing back and forth on the plush Persian rug. My stomach let out a sharp, uncomfortable twist. The stress was getting to me. I wrapped my arms around my waist, holding my lower belly protective.
"We're going to be okay," I whispered aloud to the tiny, invisible life inside me. "I won't let them take you, and I won't let him turn you into a tool for his empire."
A quiet knock at the side door of the suite startled me. Not the main hallway door, but a smaller service door near the walk-in closet.
"Emma? Elizabeth?" a cautious voice whispered from the other side.
"Liam?" I ran to the door, fumbling with the latch until it clicked open.
Liam slid through the narrow opening, looking disheveled, worried, and completely out of place in his faded hoodie against the backdrop of the luxury suite.
"Liam! Oh thank God," I threw my arms around his neck, hugging him tightly.
"Are you okay? Did those suits hurt you?" Liam asked, pulling back to look at me, hands on my shoulders. "Two guys in black sedans pulled up to our apartment building an hour ago, pushed me into a car, and brought me here. They said it was for my protection, but this place looks like a warlord's compound!"
"It's Alessandro Vitali's home," I explained rapidly, keeping my voice down. "Liam, Marcus Vance found me today at the diner. Alessandro stopped him, but now Alessandro brought us here. He knows my real name. He knows about my dad's debts."
Liam swore under his breath, dragging a hand through his messy hair. "This is bad, Em. The Vitalis... they aren't just real estate moguls. Everyone in Chicago knows they control half the shipping ports and political pockets in the city. If you're caught between Vance and Vitali..."
"It gets worse," I confessed, my voice barely audible as tears welled up in my eyes again.
Liam looked at me, his expression softening into deep concern. "What is it? What aren't you telling me?"
I looked down at my hands, my chest heaving with choked sob. "I'm pregnant, Liam."
Liam went dead silent. The wind outside slammed against the balcony glass, filling the heavy silence between us.
"Pregnant?" Liam repeated, his voice dropping to a stunned whisper. "With... with Vitali's baby? From that night six weeks ago?"
I nodded slowly, tears spilling down my cheeks. "I took a test this morning right before you knocked on the bathroom door. That's why I was sick. Liam, he has a private doctor coming to examine me in less than two hours. Once that doctor draws my blood, Alessandro will know. He thinks I'm a con artist who targeted him for his money! If he finds out I'm carrying his child, he'll either take the baby away from me the moment it's born, or he'll lock me in this house forever!"
Liam grabbed my hands, his eyes burning with protective determination. "No. No way in hell am I letting some billionaire take your kid, Em. We're getting out of here."
"How?" I asked, looking around the opulent room. "The doors are locked, there are guards at every gate, and the estate is fortified like a bunker!"
"I came through the old servant passages," Liam said, gesturing to the small door he had just walked through. "The driver who brought me in didn't realize I used to work HVAC installation on high-end Lake Forest estates during college. These old mansions all have interconnected maintenance tunnels behind the walls for plumbing and electrical lines. They lead straight down to the old carriage house near the lower woods."
Hope, fragile and sharp, pierced through my despair.
"Can we get out through there?" I asked.
"If we move now, before the guards do their afternoon shift change," Liam said firmly. "I saw a break in the perimeter fence near the woods where a tree fell during last night's storm. We can slip out, get to the highway, and take a bus out of the state. I have cash saved up."
I looked around the luxurious room one last time. Leaving meant running forever. It meant abandoning nursing school, giving up any chance of a normal life, and living as a fugitive from both the mob and the most powerful billionaire in Chicago.
But staying meant giving up my child to Alessandro’s world of dark secrets, cold steel, and endless lies.
"Let's go," I said, taking Liam’s hand.
We slipped into the dark, dusty service tunnel behind the closet, pulling the small door shut behind us. The air was cold and smelled of damp brick and old iron. We moved quickly in the dim light, descending narrow spiral stairs that wound deep beneath the main floor of the mansion.
After ten tense minutes of navigating the labyrinthine passages, we reached a rusted iron door that opened into the dense, rain-soaked woods near the edge of the estate. The storm was howling now, rain pouring down in heavy sheets, soaking through my thin sweater within seconds.
"This way!" Liam called out over the roar of the wind, pointing through the thick trees toward the perimeter wall.
We ran through the mud, slipping and scrambling through the wet underbrush. My heart hammered wildly, my lungs burning as I pushed my body forward, holding one hand defensively over my stomach.
Up ahead, through the heavy downpour, I saw the fallen oak tree resting heavily over the smashed iron fence. Freedom was twenty yards away.
Suddenly, a bright, blinding beam of light cut through the storm, illuminating us in its harsh white glare.
"Going somewhere, Elizabeth?"
A dark, icy voice echoed through the woods.
I froze, wiping rain from my eyes. Standing near the edge of the tree line, surrounded by four armed security guards under heavy black umbrellas, was Alessandro.
He didn't have an umbrella. He stood in the pouring rain, his dark hair plastered to his forehead, his suit soaked through, his amber eyes burning with a terrifying, apocalyptic fury.
He stepped forward, his leather shoes sinking into the mud, pulling a black velvet box and a folded sheet of paper from his coat pocket.
"Did you really think you could run from me again?" Alessandro asked softly, his voice cutting through the sound of thunder like a razor blade. "Did you really think I wouldn't check the security logs of the old tunnels the moment you vanished from your room?"
Liam stepped in front of me defensively. "Leave her alone, Vitali! She doesn't want anything to do with you or your money!"
Alessandro didn't even look at Liam. He flicked his hand, and two guards instantly stepped forward, grabbing Liam by the arms and pinning him to the ground before he could fight back.
"Liam!" I screamed, trying to reach him, but Alessandro closed the distance between us in two long strides, catching me by the arms and pulling me flush against his hard chest.
"Let him go!" I sobbed, struggling against his iron grip in the roaring rain. "Please, Alessandro! It was my idea! Don't hurt him!"
"Quiet," Alessandro commanded, his voice tight, his face inches from mine. Rain droplets rolled down his sharp cheekbones. "I'm not going to hurt your friend, Elizabeth. But you are going to stop lying to me."
He raised his hand, holding up the folded sheet of paper he had pulled from his pocket. The rain began to smear the black ink on it, but I could still read the header at the top: LAKE FOREST MEDICAL LABORATORY - URGENT BLOOD WORK RESULTS.
My heart plummeted into a deep, bottomless pit.
"Dr. Harrison arrived early," Alessandro whispered, his amber eyes searching mine with a terrifying mix of raw anger, awe, and something deeply broken. "He didn't need to examine you. He took the blood sample you left on the gauze at the diner when you scraped your arm earlier."
He stepped closer, his chest heaving against mine, his hot breath visible in the cold storm air.
"HCG levels indicate six weeks of gestation," Alessandro read, his voice trembling slightly for the very first time. He dropped the paper into the mud and looked dead into my eyes. "Two pink lines, Elizabeth. You are carrying my child."
I squeezed my eyes shut, fresh tears mixing with the freezing rain on my face. "Alessandro... please..."
"Why were you running?" he demanded, his hand moving from my arm to gently, almost reverently, cup the side of my face. His fingers were cold, but his touch sent a jolt of fire through my skin. "Why were you going to hide my own flesh and blood from me?"
"Because you don't trust me!" I cried out, pushing against his chest. "Because you think I'm a scheming blackmailer! Because if I stayed, you would lock me up and turn this baby into just another asset in your corporate empire! I won't let my baby grow up in a world of dark secrets and threat vectors!"
Alessandro stared at me, the rain pouring over both of us as thunder rumbled heavily across the grey sky over Lake Michigan. Slowly, the terrifying fury in his eyes began to melt, replaced by something deep, raw, and completely exposed.
He popped open the small black velvet box in his hand. Inside sat a massive, flawless emerald-cut diamond ring, sparkling even beneath the dark rain clouds.
"I don't want an asset," Alessandro said softly, his voice remarkably steady despite the storm around us. "And I don't want a prisoner."
I stared at the ring, then back up at his face, completely bewildered. "What... what is this?"
"This is a proposal," Alessandro said, stepping so close our clothes rubbed together. "You are coming back to the house, Elizabeth. Not as a captive. Not as a temp waitress under a fake name. You are coming back as my fiancée. You will have my name, my fortune, my security, and my entire empire protecting you and our child from Vance and anyone else who dares to look at you."
"Are you insane?" I gasped, shaking my head in disbelief. "You don't love me! We spent one night together! You don't even know who I am!"
"I know you spent six weeks hiding in a damp apartment, working double shifts at a diner to pay off an honest debt, rather than using my night with you to demand millions," Alessandro said, his tone softening with an intense, overwhelming warmth. "I know you tried to run into a thunderstorm to protect a friend. And I know that from the moment I held your elbow at that gala, I haven't slept a single full night without thinking about your eyes."
He grabbed my left hand, pulling it up between us, sliding the heavy diamond ring onto my ring finger. It fit perfectly.
May you like
"You wanted a light on the porch, Elizabeth," Alessandro whispered, resting his forehead against mine as the rain poured over us. "I am building you a fortress with a light that will never go out. Marry me. Let me protect you."
I looked into his amber eyes, lost in the overwhelming storm of fear, desire, and sudden, dizzying hope. Outside, the rain raged on—but standing in his grip, surrounded by his power and his terrifying promise, I knew my old life was completely gone.
