Chapter 6 - A Light on the PorchSeven months later.

The summer sun streamed through the massive floor-to-ceiling windows of the newly renovated nursery in the East Wing of the Vitali Estate. Soft yellow walls were painted with delicate white murals of trees, and a handmade carved wooden crib sat peacefully in the center of the room.
I stood by the window in a simple, comfortable white cotton dress, looking out over the sparkling blue expanse of Lake Michigan. My bump was full and heavy now, evidence of the healthy, incredible life kicking softly inside me.
A pair of strong arms wrapped gently around my waist from behind. Alessandro rested his chin on my shoulder, his large hands coming to rest over mine on my stomach.
"The board meeting ended early," he whispered, kissing the curve of my neck.
"Did you sign the trade papers?" I asked, turning slightly in his arms.
"I signed them," he smiled, a real, warm smile that had become a permanent feature of his face over the last few months. "And I officially handed over the management of the Vitali Foundation's medical scholarship fund to you. The university accepted your curriculum proposal this morning."
I laughed softly, leaning back against his chest. "So I'm officially a board director now?"
"You are the director of whatever you want to be, my love," he said, turning me in his arms so I could face him.
Over the past seven months, the dark storm that had threatened to destroy us had completely cleared. The O'Malley syndicate was permanently dissolved following a massive federal investigation backed by Alessandro’s legal team. My father's name had been cleared of criminal wrongdoing, framed as a victim of predatory fraud. Liam had opened his own successful web architecture firm with backing from Alessandro's investment arm, and he was a regular guest at our Sunday family dinners.
Most importantly, the cold, calculating billionaire who had once entered Room 1520 was gone. In his place was a husband who stayed up late reading pregnancy books, who brought me warm tea at 2:00 AM, and who looked at me every day as if I were the center of his universe.
Suddenly, a sharp, familiar flutter tightened across my lower belly. I gasped softly, clutching Alessandro’s forearm.
"Elizabeth?" His amber eyes instantly went wide with panic. "Is it time? Is it the baby?"
"It's just a kick," I laughed softly, catching his hand and placing it firmly over the right side of my bump. "Feel that?"
A distinct, powerful kick pressed right beneath his palm.
Alessandro went completely still. The powerful titan of Chicago, a man who commanded billions of dollars without flinching, stood breathless in a sunlit nursery, his eyes welling up with raw, unadulterated tears.
He dropped slowly to his knees, pressing his forehead gently against my belly, kissing the thin cotton of my dress.
"Thank you," he whispered, his voice thick with emotion. "Thank you for not running away."
I ran my fingers through his dark hair, looking down at the man who had built a wall of steel around my heart, only to fill it with infinite warmth.
May you like
"I'm never running again, Alessandro," I said softly, looking out at the glittering lake as the sun painted the sky in shades of gold and pink. "I finally found my home."
Outside, on the grand stone pillars of the estate's main gates, a soft amber lantern flickered to life against the twilight—a porch light that would never go out.
