Chapter 2 - The House of CardsThe silence that followed Clara’s departure was suffocating.

Adrian stood motionless for a long moment, staring at the closed door. Then, slowly, he turned his head toward Vanessa. The woman who had shared his bed, whispered sweet reassurances into his ear, and integrated herself into his household over the past six months suddenly looked like a stranger—a parasite wearing human skin.
"Get out," Adrian said.
Vanessa blinked, her jaw dropping. "Adrian, honey, please. Let's not be rash. We were stressed, the baby was crying, it was an accident—"
"I said, get out," Adrian repeated, stepping toward her.
Olivia stood by the stairs, her arms crossed, watching the scene with cold, unyielding disgust. "If you don't pack your bags in the next five minutes, Vanessa, I’m calling the police and handing over the raw video file for attempted child endangerment. Make your choice."
Vanessa realized the game was over. The mask slipped completely, her face twisting into an ugly, resentful sneer. She snatched her designer handbag off the floor, adjusted her coat with jerky, furious movements, and marched toward the door.
"You're making a huge mistake, Adrian!" Vanessa spat, pausing with her hand on the brass doorknob. "You think you're some kind of high-and-mighty protector? Without me, you're just a miserable widower drowning in a big empty house! You deserve each other!"
The door slammed behind her, rattling the glass panes in the sidelights.
Adrian didn't flinch. He walked over to the grand staircase, sat down heavily on the bottom step, and buried his face in his calloused hands.
Olivia walked over slowly, standing above him. She didn't offer a comforting hand. She had her mother's sharp intellect and zero tolerance for her father's blinding arrogance.
"You really messed up this time, Dad," Olivia said quietly.
"I know," Adrian murmured, his voice muffled by his hands.
"You didn't just insult Clara. You humiliated her in front of the person who tried to murder your daughter, and you rewarded the monster with your trust." Olivia shook her head. "I've been trying to tell you for months that Vanessa was playing you. She was always going through your study files when you weren't home. She was always dropping subtle hints about firing Clara. But you wouldn't listen because she made you feel important."
Adrian looked up, his eyes bloodshot and haunted. "How did you get that footage, Liv?"
Olivia tapped her phone screen. "I installed a secondary nanny cam disguised as a smart smoke detector over the stair landing last week because I caught Vanessa going through Clara's room. I synced it to my cloud storage. I was reviewing the live stream on my phone when I heard the commotion downstairs."
Adrian swallowed hard, feeling the bitter pill of his own stupidity settle in his throat. He had built an empire in corporate finance, negotiating multi-million-dollar mergers and reading human weakness like a balance sheet. Yet, in his own home, he had been played like a fool by a grifter, while driving away the only person who genuinely loved his family.

"I need to find her," Adrian said, standing up abruptly.
"Good luck with that," Olivia replied dryly. "Clara has dignity. You just trampled all over it. If you want her back, you're going to have to do a lot more than say you're sorry."
