Chapter 5 - The Gathering StormThree weeks passed.

The federal indictment against Vanessa Cole moved swiftly, and within days of Vance’s investigation, she was arrested in a downtown boutique trying to fence stolen jewelry. The media caught wind of the scandal, splashing headlines across local newspapers: Corporate Exec’s Fiancée Exposed as Con Artist After Dramatic Nanny-Cam Reveal.
Adrian watched the news report from his silent study, feeling no sense of victory—only a profound, hollow ache.
The house was clean, but it was empty. Olivia had moved into a campus dorm for her senior year at Ohio State, unable to stand the oppressive atmosphere of the mansion. Little Emma was cared for by a rotating agency of professional nannies, none of whom stayed longer than a week because Adrian’s cold, brooding demeanor made the estate feel like a mausoleum.
He had everything money could buy, and absolutely nothing that mattered.
One evening in late November, as a cold rain drummed against the study windows, Adrian pulled out a small, worn leather journal he had found tucked away in the back of Clara’s desk drawer weeks ago. He hadn't opened it, respecting her privacy. But tonight, desperate for any glimpse of the woman he had lost, he opened the cover.
Inside was Clara’s handwriting—neat, elegant, and filled with quiet reflections.
“October 14: Emma took her first steps today while Adrian was in New York. I wish he had been here to see it. He works so hard to protect his family, but sometimes I think he forgets that the people waiting at home need presence, not just provision. Still, I pray he finds peace.”
Adrian’s breath hitched. A tear slipped down his cheek, landing directly on the ink. She hadn't resented him; she had understood him better than he understood himself. And he had repaid her empathy with suspicion, violence, and rejection.
He closed the journal, stood up, and walked over to the window. He knew he couldn't undo the past. He knew an apology couldn't erase the sound of his hand striking her face. But he also knew he couldn't spend the rest of his life wondering what if.

He picked up his phone, dialed Marcus Vance’s number, and spoke with absolute resolve.
"Marcus. Find her. I don't care how much it costs or how long it takes. Find Clara."
