Chapter 6 - The Counter-Attack
Three days after the eviction, Vance tried a desperate new tactic.
I was in the middle of a high-stakes Zoom conference call with our primary European investors when my phone buzzed incessantly with text notifications and missed call alerts from unknown numbers. When I took a five-minute recess, I checked the screen.
Dozens of frantic messages from mutual acquaintances, distant relatives, and even a few gossip blogs were flooding my inbox. Attached to the messages were links to a public GoFundMe campaign and a sensationalized social media post written by none other than Tinsley.
The post painted a tragic, wildly fabricated tale of woe: “My innocent brother Vance and our elderly mother were ruthlessly thrown onto the streets by his cold, narcissistic tech-billionaire wife Sloan Miller, who trapped him in an abusive marriage and stole his life savings!”
Accompanying the post was a heavily filtered, tragic-looking photo of Vance staring sorrowfully out a window, looking like a victim of cruel and unusual punishment.
I stared at the screen in disbelief. Not only had he stolen two million dollars from my company, but now he was trying to publicly assassinate my character and play the victim to save face among our social circle.
Before I could even draft a public response, my PR director, Chloe, called me directly.
“Sloan, have you seen this absolute garbage circulating online?” Chloe asked, her voice tight with professional rage.
“I'm looking at it right now,” I replied calmly.
“Give me the green light. I can have our legal team issue an immediate cease-and-desist for defamation, and we can release a public statement detailing his federal indictment for corporate embezzlement.”
“Don't just issue a cease-and-desist, Chloe,” I said, a cold smile forming on my lips. “Release the forensic audit summary and the court documents showing his arrest warrant for felony grand larceny. Let the public see the truth of who they’re feeling sorry for.”
Chloe let out a sharp laugh. “Consider it done. I’ll have our communications team drop the press release across Business Wire and social media within the hour.”
The counter-offensive was swift and devastating.
Within two hours of our public statement dropping, the internet narrative shifted dramatically. The public sympathy for Vance evaporated faster than morning dew. Major tech news outlets picked up the story: “Local Tech CEO Sloan Miller Files Federal Embezzlement Charges Against Estranged Husband.” Screenshots of the shell company bank statements, the Cayman Island wire transfers, and the court-ordered asset freeze were published everywhere.

Vance’s grand strategy of public manipulation had completely backfired, exposing him not as a tragic romantic hero, but as a pathetic white-collar criminal who had tried to rob his own wife and failed miserably.
