Chapter 3 - The Alliance in the ShadowsThree days passed in a tense, heavily guarded silence inside the Morgan estate. Private security guards rotated shifts outside the perimeter gates, and Lily was kept home from school under the watchful care of a trusted family nanny while Daniel worked around the clock from his home office.

The forensic audit of Victoria’s accounts revealed a mountain of digital paper trails—emails between Victoria and Jonathan Vance detailing the exact timeline for the fabricated abuse allegations, text messages coordinating the transfer of corporate funds, and drafts of legal documents designed to strip Daniel of his voting shares in the event of an emergency custody restriction.

It was an airtight case of conspiracy, corporate espionage, and extortion. But Daniel knew that simply handing the files to the local police wouldn't be enough. Vance was a master of legal maneuvering; he had layers of insulation, offshore accounts, and bought-and-paid-for attorneys who could stall a criminal proceeding for years while destroying Daniel’s reputation in the press.

To beat Vance, Daniel needed to take the fight directly to his front door.

On Thursday evening, a nondescript black town car pulled up to a private aviation hangar at Chicago Midway International Airport. Daniel stepped out of the vehicle, wearing a dark wool overcoat, his face carved from stone. He was met near the entrance of the hangar by a sharp-suited woman with piercing blue eyes and a posture that screamed military intelligence.

"Mr. Morgan," she said, extending a hand. "Agent Claire Vance—no relation to Jonathan, I assure you. We share a last name and very little else."

Daniel shook her hand firmly. Claire was a senior investigator for the federal corporate fraud task force, a woman who had spent five years trying to nail Jonathan Vance for interstate racketeering without ever getting a cooperating witness inside his inner circle.

Until now.

"You have the files?" Daniel asked, stepping inside the warm, cavernous hangar where a private jet idled on the tarmac.

"I have everything," Claire said, walking over to a stainless-steel table covered in encrypted drives and printed bank ledgers. She tapped a folder labeled Meridian Holdings. "Your wife’s unauthorized wire transfers were the missing link we needed to freeze Vance’s primary domestic accounts. But there’s more, Daniel. Vance isn't just trying to bankrupt your company or steal your assets. He’s planning a hostile buyout of the entire logistics sector in the Midwest, and your IPO is the keystone holding up his entire financial house of cards."

"If the IPO goes public next Tuesday without interference, his short positions will wipe him out," Daniel realized aloud.

"Exactly," Claire nodded. "Which is why he panicked and pushed Victoria to fabricate the custody crisis. He needed you distracted, discredited, and legally incapacitated so you couldn't defend your voting shares at the shareholder meeting on Monday."

Daniel’s jaw tightened. "He targeted my daughter just to manipulate a stock vote."

"People like Jonathan Vance don't care about collateral damage, Mr. Morgan," Claire said quietly. "Which is why we need to move tonight. We have enough evidence from your wife’s digital footprint to execute a federal search warrant on Vance’s primary estate in Lake Geneva. But we need a catalyst—someone from his inner circle willing to walk in and hand over the physical ledger keys."

Daniel looked down at his phone, which displayed a frantic, missed text message from an unknown number. He opened it. It was from Victoria:

“Daniel, please pick up. Vance lied to me. He said he’d protect me, but his lawyers just dropped me off at a cheap motel with nothing. He’s planning to pin the entire embezzlement charge on me alone. Please, you have to help me.”

Daniel stared at the screen for a long, quiet moment. The anger that had consumed him three days ago had burned down into something colder, sharper, and far more strategic.

"Give me two hours," Daniel told Claire, sliding his phone back into his pocket. "I’ll get you the physical keys to Meridian Holdings. But in exchange, Victoria gets immunity from federal prosecution to testify against Vance in open court."

Claire raised an eyebrow, surprised. "You're willing to cut a deal with the woman who tried to frame you?"

"I’m not doing it for her," Daniel said, his voice cold and absolute. "I'm doing it so my daughter never has to wonder why her family fell apart because of greed. Let's go pay Mr. Vance a visit."
