Chapter 4 - The Lake Geneva TrapThe sprawling iron gates of Jonathan Vance’s Lake Geneva estate loomed like the jaws of a medieval fortress against the dark, stormy Wisconsin night. Rain lashed sideways across the windshield of Daniel’s armored sedan as Marcus maneuvered the vehicle smoothly past the gate sensors, utilizing a cloned digital security pass provided by Claire’s federal task force.

Inside the main mansion, a warm, golden glow spilled from the towering arched windows of the second-floor study.
Daniel sat in the backseat, his hands resting calmly on his knees, reviewing the final checklist on his tablet. Beside him sat two armed federal marshals in tactical gear, their expressions tense and focused.
"Remember," Daniel instructed quietly, looking at the marshals. "Vance is slippery. He has armed private security on the grounds, but our objective isn't a firefight. We secure the physical server room on the lower level, pull the hard copies of the ledger keys, and lock down the communication grid before he realizes the house is surrounded."
"Understood, Mr. Morgan," the lead marshal nodded, checking the safety on his carbine.
The sedan rolled silently to a halt near the side service entrance of the mansion. The doors popped open simultaneously, and the team moved with disciplined, fluid precision into the shadows of the stone colonnade.
Inside, the house smelled of polished mahogany, expensive cigars, and old money. They bypassed the grand foyer, slipping down a narrow, wood-paneled hallway that led directly to the lower-level executive vault.
Two of Vance’s private guards stood outside the heavy steel vault door, talking quietly. Before they could even reach for their holstered sidearms, Marcus and the marshals moved in with terrifying speed, dropping both guards with non-lethal suppressors and lowering their bodies silently to the carpet.
Daniel stepped up to the digital keypad of the vault. He pulled a small, modified flash drive from his pocket—copied from the diagnostic logs Victoria had reluctantly surrendered three hours earlier at the safehouse—and plugged it into the USB port.
The screen flickered red, processed a rapid sequence of decryption algorithms, and flashed green.
Access Granted.
The heavy steel door swung inward with a pneumatic hiss. Inside sat rows of climate-controlled server racks, filing cabinets containing decades of illegal shell company deeds, and a metal lockbox bearing the physical master signatures of Meridian Holdings.
"We got it," Daniel said into his lapel comms link, connecting directly to Agent Claire Vance, who was waiting with backup units at the perimeter gate. "All physical ledgers and server backups are secured."
"Copy that, Daniel," Claire’s voice crackled back, urgent and breathless. "Get out of there now. We just intercepted a dispatch from Vance’s private detail. He knows the federal freeze orders hit his primary accounts, and he’s heading down to the vault right now with a private tactical squad."
Before Daniel could issue an evacuation order, heavy footsteps echoed down the stone corridor outside.
"Well, well, well," a smooth, arrogant voice rang out from the doorway.
Jonathan Vance stepped into the vault light, wearing a tailored silk bathrobe, a quiet, predatory smirk playing across his thin lips. In his right hand, he held a sleek, suppressed Walther PPK, aimed directly at Daniel’s chest.
"I wondered how long it would take you to crawl out of your corporate hole, Daniel," Vance chuckled, his eyes gleaming with cold amusement. "Did you really think a few forged bank statements and a disgruntled ex-wife were going to bring down my empire?"
Daniel didn't flinch. He didn't raise his hands. He simply stood tall beside the open vault door, his expression an impenetrable mask of absolute calm.
"Your empire was built on sand, Jonathan," Daniel said, his voice echoing steadily off the stone walls. "And the tide came in about ten minutes ago."

Vance’s smile flickered for a fraction of a second. Before he could squeeze the trigger, the heavy oak door at the end of the hallway burst open with a resounding crash, followed by the deafening roar of federal tactical flash-bangs and the authoritative shout of Agent Claire Vance:
"Federal Law Enforcement! Drop your weapon!"
