Chapter 2 - The Reversal of PowerThe silence that followed Alexander’s question was heavy enough to crush bone.

Brenda’s mouth opened and closed twice, like a fish gasping for air in a drained pond. Her professional composure—that glittering, untouchable armor she wore while terrorizing the junior hostesses—crumbled away, revealing a frantic, cornered bureaucrat.

"I... well, I heard rumors, Mr. Remington," Brenda stammered, her eyes darting nervously toward the security guards flanking the doorway. "In an establishment like this, employee screening is paramount. When Ms. Albright was hired three months ago, her background file noted certain... domestic complications. It’s common knowledge among the floor managers that she’s a single mother abandoned by a wealthy local benefactor."

Alexander slowly stood up from his leather armchair, still supporting Paige with one strong arm while adjusting his bespoke suit jacket with the other. He didn't raise his voice. He didn't need to. Every movement he made commanded absolute, unquestioning obedience.

"Common knowledge," Alexander repeated, the words dripping with sarcasm. He stepped forward out of the shadows of his desk, the overhead light catching the sharp angles of his jawline and the icy gray of his eyes. "Strange, Brenda. I review every personnel file that enters this building personally. There is no mention of domestic complications in Ms. Albright’s file. Nor is there any record of a father's identity. So I ask you again: how is it that you, a floor manager who supposedly focuses on table turnover and wine pairings, possess intimate knowledge of my employee’s private family arrangements?"

Brenda swallowed hard, her hands trembling slightly as she clutched her tablet. "Mr. Remington, I only meant—"

"You meant that you were looking for an excuse to terminate her without severance," a cool, deep voice interrupted from the doorway.

Everyone turned. Marcus Vance, Alexander’s personal legal counsel and chief operating officer for the western region, stepped past the security guards. He was holding a slim manila folder, his expression impassive.

Marcus glanced briefly at Hannah, offering a reassuring nod before turning his attention back to Brenda. "In fact, Ms. Gable, your name isn't even Brenda Gable in the corporate registry, is it? Or should I say, Brenda Vance-Gable? The estranged sister-in-law of Arthur Gable, the real estate developer who has been trying to purchase the block containing The Grandview for the past two years."

The color left Brenda's face entirely, leaving her looking chalk-white under the fluorescent bulbs.

"I don't know what you're talking about," Brenda hissed, though her voice lacked conviction.

"Oh, you know precisely what I'm talking about," Marcus countered smoothly, flipping open the folder. "We’ve been auditing the San Mateo branch’s internal communications for the past week due to an anonymous tip regarding industrial espionage. It turns out someone in management has been feeding confidential employee logs and operational schedules to outside real estate syndicates to force the valuation of this property down. And conveniently, you were the one who personally fast-tracked Hannah Albright’s hiring, making sure she was assigned to the worst shifts, knowing she had a child, and setting her up for a public violation of our safety codes."

Hannah stood frozen, her mind spinning. The horrifying realization settled over her like a physical weight: she hadn't just accidentally broken a rule by bringing Paige to work—she had walked straight into a trap carefully laid by corporate saboteurs who intended to use her desperate circumstances as a weapon against the restaurant.

Alexander looked down at Paige, who stirred slightly in his arms, letting out a soft sigh before burying her face back against his lapel. A faint, almost imperceptible softening touched the corners of Alexander’s mouth.

He looked up, his gaze locking onto Brenda with an intensity that made the manager shrink backward.

"Security," Alexander said quietly.

The two guards immediately stepped forward, their massive frames blocking the exit.

"Escort Ms. Gable off the premises," Alexander ordered. "Confiscate her corporate tablet, her access pass, and her phone. Have our forensic IT team mirror every hard drive she’s touched in the last six months. If she attempts to contact anyone outside this building before the authorities arrive, ensure she understands the full weight of a federal trade secret violation lawsuit."

"You can't do this!" Brenda shrieked, her professional veneer shattering completely as the guards grabbed her arms. "You're making a mistake! She brought a baby into a commercial kitchen! She endangered public health!"

May you like

"The only thing endangered in this building was my patience," Alexander replied coldly.

As Brenda was dragged protesting up the concrete stairs, the heavy oak door swung shut behind them, plunging the basement office back into a profound, suffocating quiet.
