Chapter 4 - The Iron and the VelvetThe transition from a terrified waitress on the brink of eviction to an executive liaison at The Grandview was nothing short of seismic. Within forty-eight hours, Marcus Vance’s legal team had completely dismantled Brenda Gable’s saboteur network, uncovering a paper trail of financial kickbacks linking her directly to Arthur Gable’s real estate conglomerate.

By Friday morning, Brenda had been formally indicted on federal charges of corporate espionage and extortion. The board of directors, initially skeptical of Alexander’s sudden restructuring of the employee welfare division, quickly fell in line when Marcus presented the forensic audits proving that Hannah’s accidental discovery had saved the company millions in compromised intellectual property.
Hannah’s new office was located on the third floor—not tucked away in a damp service corridor, but bathed in natural light overlooking the bustling marina of San Mateo. It featured a sleek oak desk, a ergonomic leather chair, and, most importantly, a fully equipped corporate daycare suite right next door, staffed by certified professionals funded entirely by the Remington Foundation.
On her fourth day in the new role, Hannah sat at her desk reviewing the preliminary budget for the employee hardship fund—an initiative Alexander had personally commissioned her to design.
A soft knock sounded at the open door.
Marcus Vance stepped inside, holding a thick leather-bound dossier. He offered a polite, professional smile. "Good morning, Hannah. How are you settling into the new command center?"
"Still feels like I'm going to wake up and find myself scrubbing grease traps," Hannah admitted with a small laugh, setting down her pen. "Paige loves the daycare, though. The director says she’s already the most social baby in the infant room."
"Good. Mr. Remington likes results, and keeping our staff stable is his primary objective right now," Marcus said, pulling up a chair opposite her desk. He slid the dossier across the polished wood. "Speaking of objectives... we have a minor complication regarding your ex-partner, Julian Vance."
Hannah’s posture stiffened instantly. The name felt like a physical blow, stirring up old ghosts she thought she had buried deep in the past. "What about him?"
"Arthur Gable is Julian’s uncle," Marcus explained calmly, though his eyes carried a sharp, analytical glint. "When Arthur’s corporate espionage ring collapsed this week, his legal team started scrambling for leverage. They discovered that Julian is the biological father of your child. And since Julian’s family name carries considerable legal weight in this county, they are threatening to file a sudden paternity and emergency custody suit—claiming you are an 'unstable, destitute single mother' who smuggled an infant into a commercial restaurant."
Anger, hot and fierce, surged through Hannah’s veins. For eighteen months, Julian hadn't sent a single dime, hadn't made a single phone call, and hadn't cared whether she and Paige starved in their drafty apartment. Now, because his uncle’s criminal enterprise was falling apart, he wanted to use their daughter as a pawn in a corporate revenge plot.
"He abandoned us," Hannah said, her voice shaking with suppressed rage. "He offered me hush money to go away. I have text messages saved from the day I told him I was keeping the baby—he told me to get an abortion or deal with it alone."
"I know," Marcus said smoothly, opening the dossier to reveal a series of certified legal transcripts and financial disclosures. "Which is why Mr. Remington anticipated this move before we even announced your promotion."
Hannah blinked, surprised. "Alexander anticipated this?"
"Mr. Remington leaves very little to chance," Marcus replied, tapping a finger against the document. "When you work for the Remington empire, you are protected by the Remington legal shield. Alexander has already retained our firm’s top family law specialists. Furthermore, Mr. Remington has personally established a secured irrevocable trust for Paige’s future education and welfare, making you the sole legal guardian with absolute financial autonomy. If Julian Vance steps foot inside a courtroom, he won't just lose the custody battle—he’ll face perjury charges for lying on his initial financial affidavits regarding his asset concealment."
Hannah stared at the dossier, overwhelmed by a wave of gratitude so profound it left her speechless. For her entire adult life, she had been forced to fight every battle alone, absorbing every blow without a safety net. Now, standing behind a desk provided by a man the city feared, she realized she was no longer defenseless.
Before she could respond, the office doors swung open.
Alexander Remington walked in, wearing his signature charcoal suit, his sleeves rolled up slightly at the wrists. He glanced at Marcus, then at Hannah.
"I trust my legal counsel is briefing you on the Vance situation," Alexander said, his tone brisk and commanding.
"He is," Hannah said, standing up from her desk. Her voice was steady, infused with a new, unshakeable strength. "And I want you to know, Mr. Remington... I won't let you down. Whatever corporate fallout comes from this custody threat, I'm ready to handle it."

Alexander stopped walking, turning his sharp gray eyes toward her. A faint, approving glint appeared in his gaze.
"I know you are, Hannah," he said quietly. "Because unlike the people who tried to tear this company down, you know what it means to build something from the ashes. And tomorrow morning, we're going to prove it to the rest of the city."
