Chapter 5 - The Vault

The beam of the marshal’s tactical flashlight swept across Damian’s sprawling office, illuminating leather-bound armchairs, a polished oak desk, and expensive bottles of scotch lined up along a mahogany sideboard.
Damian sat behind his massive executive desk, caught completely off guard. He had been hunched over a laptop, frantically typing lines of code into an offshore banking portal. When the door burst open, he leaped to his feet, his face turning an ugly shade of crimson.
“What is the meaning of this?!” Damian roared, slamming his hands onto the desk. “This is private property! Get out of my restaurant or I’ll have you all arrested for trespassing!”
The lead marshal stepped forward, flashing a federal badge right under Damian’s nose. “Damian Prescott, you are not arresting anyone. By order of the Federal District Court, we are executing an emergency asset seizure and search warrant related to corporate fraud, digital forgery, and racketeering.”
Damian’s face drained of color in an instant. His eyes darted wildly toward the doorway, landing directly on Chloe.
“You,” he hissed, his voice dropping into a venomous snarl. “You little ungrateful traitor. You stole my key!”
I stepped out from behind the marshals, my eyes locked onto his cowardly face. “She didn't steal anything, Damian. She reclaimed what you stole from her.”
“This is insane!” Damian shouted, his voice cracking with panic as he tried to reach for his laptop. “The contracts are legal! She signed them! Everything in this building belongs to Prescott Hospitality Group!”
“Not anymore,” Robert Vance said, stepping into the light with a briefcase in hand. “Marshal, secure the digital workstation. And check behind the vineyard painting on the back wall.”
Two marshals advanced instantly. One of them pinned Damian against the wall, slapping a pair of heavy steel handcuffs around his wrists with a sharp, metallic click. Damian thrashed like a trapped animal, cursing and screaming threats that echoed down the empty hallway.
The second marshal located the massive oil painting of the Tuscan vineyard on the back wall, lifting it off its hinges to reveal a heavy steel wall safe set directly into the brickwork.
“We have a digital keypad and a keyhole,” the marshal reported.
Chloe stepped forward, pulling a small silver key attached to her necklace—a key Damian didn't even know she had duplicated months ago. “Use this key for the primary lock,” she said calmly. “And the combination is my birthday: 0-4-1-2-9-3.”
The marshal dialed the numbers, turned the heavy steel handle, and pulled the iron door open.
Inside the safe sat rows of thick paper ledgers, original handwritten deeds to Chloe’s graphic design studio, hidden bank deposit slips routed to offshore accounts in the Cayman Islands, and—most damning of all—original hard copies of corporate tax returns bearing forged signatures that Damian had submitted under Chloe’s name without her knowledge.
The marshal pulled the ledgers out, stacking them neatly on the desk in front of Robert Vance.
Robert opened the top binder, scanning the columns of numbers with a professional, satisfied smile. “Well, Damian,” Robert said quietly, looking up at the handcuffed restaurateur. “It appears you didn't just commit fraud against my client. You also embezzled three hundred thousand dollars from your own restaurant’s investor pool to fund your personal lifestyle. That’s a federal penitentiary offense.”

Damian slumped forward against the wall, all the arrogant color completely drained from his face. The mighty owner of The Hearth, the man who had terrorized my daughter and forced her to eat scraps from dirty plates, looked like a pathetic, broken coward.
“It’s over, Damian,” Chloe said, her voice ringing clear and strong through the office. “You can’t control me anymore.”
