Chapter 8 - The Trial Preparations

The autumn air had turned crisp by the time Robert Vance called us with the news we had been waiting for. Damian Prescott’s federal trial was set to begin in October at the U.S. District Court in Atlanta.
“His defense team is trying to cut a plea deal,” Robert told us over speakerphone in my living room. “They want to plead guilty to wire fraud in exchange for dropping the federal coercion and forced labor charges, which would significantly reduce his prison sentence.”
Chloe’s jaw tightened. She looked at me, her eyes flashing with a fierce, resolute fire.
“No plea deal,” Chloe said firmly into the phone. “I want him to stand trial for what he did to me. I want the judge, the jury, and the public to hear every single detail of how he treated not just me, but every employee he manipulated and abused.”
“Are you sure, Chloe?” Robert asked gently. “Taking the stand means reliving the trauma in front of a federal jury.”
“I’m sure,” she said without a fraction of hesitation. “I spent a year hiding in the shadows because I was afraid of his voice. I am not hiding anymore.”
Over the next two weeks, Chloe prepared her testimony with Robert’s guidance. She organized her journal entries, medical records from the doctor visits she managed to sneak away for, and transcripts of the audio recordings we captured in the kitchen.
When the morning of the trial finally arrived, the federal courthouse steps were swarming with reporters and camera crews. As Chloe and I stepped out of Robert’s town car, flashbulbs popped like lightning storms.
Chloe didn't flinch. She wore a sharp, tailored navy blue pantsuit, her head held high, her shoulders back. She walked past the Wall of reporters without breaking stride, her hand resting firmly in mine.
Inside the courtroom, the atmosphere was heavy and solemn. U.S. District Judge Sarah Jenkins presided over the bench, her expression stern and focused.
When Damian Prescott was led into the courtroom in an orange jumpsuit and heavy steel leg irons, he looked like a shadow of the arrogant restaurateur he used to be. His hair was unkempt, his skin pale, and his shoulders slumped in defeat. When he caught sight of Chloe sitting at the prosecution table, his eyes flared with a brief flash of hatred before he quickly looked away.
The trial began with opening statements from the federal prosecutor, followed by Robert Vance laying out the devastating financial evidence of corporate embezzlement and digital forgery.
Then, after the lunch recess, the prosecution called their star witness.

“The government calls Chloe Miller Prescott to the stand,” the bailiff announced.
The courtroom went dead silent. Chloe stood up, smoothed her jacket, and walked steadily toward the witness box to take her oath.
