Chapter 4 - The Reckoning at the Club

The Arlington Country Club was a sanctuary of old money, manicured lawns, and quiet privilege, where retired executives and local elites gathered to sip scotch and play eighteen holes of golf.
When David’s car skidded to a halt in front of the clubhouse entrance, patrons turned their heads in shock. David didn't care. He burst through the double glass doors, ignoring the protests of the receptionist, and marched straight toward the private men’s lounge in the back.
Arthur Vance was sitting in a leather armchair by the window, nursing a glass of bourbon, a newspaper folded neatly across his lap. He looked composed, trying desperately to cloak his inner panic beneath the arrogant veneer of a respected patriarch.
When the door slammed open and David strode in, Arthur’s hand trembled slightly on his glass.
“David,” Arthur said, attempting a tight, paternal smile. “I wasn't expecting you back from Chicago until this afternoon. How was the—?”
David didn't let him finish. He lunged forward, grabbing his father by the lapels of his blazer and dragging him straight out of the armchair, slamming him hard against the wood-paneled wall.
Several elderly members gasped, dropping their newspapers and scrambling out of the lounge.
“You sick, depraved bastard,” David hissed, his voice vibrating with a rage that frightened even Arthur. “You drugged my wife. You sneaked into her bedroom in the middle of the night. If Chloe hadn't drunk that juice by mistake, God knows what you would have done.”
Arthur’s face turned pale, but he tried to maintain his arrogant defiance, pushing weakly against David’s chest. “Let go of me, you ungrateful brat! You don't know what you’re talking about! It was a harmless mistake—!”
“A mistake?!” David roared, shaking him violently against the wall. “I heard the audio, Arthur! Rebecca recorded the whole thing! And Chloe remembers waking up while you were standing over her bed!”
Arthur’s eyes widened in genuine terror as he realized the game was entirely up. The untouchable principal, the pillar of the community, was standing naked in his own filth.
“David, please,” Arthur stammered, his voice cracking as the bravado melted away. “Family... we can fix this. We can sweep this under the rug. I’ll transfer some property into your name, we’ll send Chloe away on a long trip—we can’t let the police—!”
“The police are already on their way,” a calm, steady voice interrupted from the doorway.
Arthur and David both snapped their heads around. Standing in the entrance of the lounge was Detective Miller of the Arlington Police Department, flanked by two uniformed officers, holding a digital tablet and an official arrest warrant.

“Arthur Vance,” Detective Miller stated clearly, stepping into the room. “You are under arrest for attempted poisoning, attempted sexual assault, and stalking. Anything you say can and will be used against you in a court of law.”
Arthur let out a pathetic gasp as the officers stepped forward, pulling his arms behind his back and slapping heavy steel handcuffs around his wrists. As they hauled him past the windows of the country club—past the very people who had looked up to him for decades—Arthur kept his head bowed low, his shameful legacy collapsing into complete ruin.
