Chapter 4 - THE HOUSE OF CARDSBack at the Vance estate, chaos had taken root.

It had been two weeks since Charlotte had left.

The house, once a pristine sanctuary of order, peace, and elegance, was rapidly deteriorating.

Dry cleaning was piled high in the laundry room. The kitchen counters were covered in sticky rings from takeout coffee and half-eaten pizza boxes. Tristan had failed two homework assignments because no one sat with him for two hours every evening to keep him focused.

Worse, Evelyn had virtually moved into the guest room under the pretext of "helping out."

Zachary sat at his home office desk, rubbing his aching temples.

In front of him were three missed calls from his mother, a pile of unopened mail, and a formal legal summons delivered by a court courier an hour ago.

His mother, Beatrice Vance, barged into the office without knocking.

"Zachary!" Beatrice declared loudly, waving her silk scarf dramatically. "This is completely outrageous! That ungrateful woman has frozen our joint family credit line! I went to the country club today to pay my monthly dues, and my card was declined!"

Zachary looked up, his face gaunt, shadows dark beneath his eyes. "Mother, Charlotte didn't freeze the card. The court froze it because her attorney filed an emergency financial audit."

"Her attorney?" Beatrice scoffed. "Who does she think she is? Hire the best firm in the city and destroy her! Take Chloe away from her completely! Teach that arrogant girl a lesson!"

"Do you know who her attorney is, Mother?" Zachary snapped, his voice tight with rising frustration. "It’s Eleanor! Cousin Eleanor!"

Beatrice gasped, dropping into a velvet chair. "Eleanor? But she hates our branch of the family!"

"Because she knows how this family operates!" Zachary shouted, standing up and slamming his hand onto the desk. "She has already subpoenaed my company’s tax returns! She’s asking for a forensic accounting of every dollar I transferred to Evelyn’s private account over the last four years!"

Just then, Tristan walked into the office, his face red with anger.

"Dad!" Tristan yelled. "Evelyn ruined my hockey jersey in the wash! She threw it in with white bleach! Charlotte never messed up my gear! Tell Charlotte to come back right now!"

Zachary stared at his son.

For five years, Tristan had treated Charlotte like a glorified servant, encouraged by Evelyn, Beatrice, and Zachary himself. He had laughed when she was removed from group chats, ignored her birthday, and thrown tantrums whenever she tried to enforce basic rules.

Now, faced with the actual reality of her absence, the house was falling apart at the seams.

"She’s not coming back, Tristan," Zachary said quietly, the cold truth finally settling deep into his bones.

"Why not?" Tristan stomped his foot. "Just order her to come back! Add her back to the family group chat! Tell her I’ll let her cook dinner!"

A bitter, hollow laugh escaped Zachary’s chest.

He remembered Charlotte’s face from two weeks ago—the calm, unreadable look in her eyes as she said, “Who exactly is your wife?”

He picked up his phone and opened the WhatsApp group chat.

Evelyn had posted three photos of herself baking cookies in Charlotte’s kitchen, accompanied by captions like: “Bringing warmth back to the house! ❤️”

Zachary’s mother had replied: “So wonderful to have a REAL family dynamic again!”

Looking at the messages now, without the blinding fog of his own arrogance, Zachary felt a sudden wave of intense nausea.

He tapped the screen.

Zachary Vance removed Evelyn from the group. Zachary Vance removed Beatrice Vance from the group.

He locked his phone, tossed it onto the desk, and pulled his face into his hands.
