Chapter 6 - A TASTE OF FREEDOMSix months later.

The grand opening of the Riverside Cultural Center was the event of the season in North River.
The glass-and-timber structure sat majestically along the waterfront, its sweeping arches and warm, illuminated spaces praised by architectural journals across the country.
Dressed in an exquisite emerald-green gown, Charlotte stood on the upper terrace, holding a glass of sparkling water as she chatted with local council members and international patrons.
Beside her, four-year-old Chloe—looking healthy, happy, and dressed in a pretty yellow dress—was giggling as she showed her drawing of a dragon to Sarah Lin.
"She has your artistic eye, Charlotte," Sarah remarked warmly, clinking her glass against Charlotte’s. "And the project is a masterpiece. The city board is already talking about nominating you for the State Design Award."
Charlotte smiled, feeling a deep, profound sense of inner peace.
Over the past six months, her life had transformed completely. The divorce had been finalized smoothly. She had secured full custody of Chloe, a generous property settlement, and her career had soared to heights she had never imagined possible during her years of isolation in Zachary’s mansion.
Her phone buzzed in her evening bag.
It was a text message from an unknown number, though she recognized the tone instantly:
Charlotte. Tristan got suspended from school today for fighting. Evelyn moved back to her apartment after we had a massive argument. My mother won't speak to me. I’m sitting in the empty living room looking at the fireplace. I am so sorry. Please let me see Chloe this weekend outside the center.
Charlotte looked at the message for a moment.
She felt no malice toward Zachary anymore. He was paying for his choices—living in the cold, hollow world he had built with his own arrogance, surrounded by people who had only ever valued his money and control.
She replied calmly and concisely:
The court-ordered visitation schedule remains unchanged. If you wish to request additional hours, please submit a formal application through Eleanor.
She locked her phone and slipped it back into her bag, closing the chapter forever.
Down on the main plaza, the sun was setting over the river, casting long, golden rays across the water.
Chloe ran over, clutching a small box of fresh, crispy fried chicken drumsticks from the catering table, a bright, triumphant smile on her face.
"Mom!" Chloe squealed happily. "Look! The chef gave me my very own box! He said I don't have to share with anyone!"
Charlotte dropped to one knee, wrapping her arms around her daughter, holding her close against her heart as the warm evening breeze blew past them.

"That’s right, my sweet girl," Charlotte whispered, kissing her daughter’s soft cheek. "It’s all yours."
They stood together on the balcony, looking out at the vast, open horizon—a future lit by love, dignity, and a freedom that no one could ever take away again.
