Chapter 10 - The Open Road

The clutch bit smoothly as I eased my foot off the pedal, and Uncle Mateo’s roadster surged forward down the long, winding suburban blacktop.

The cool autumn wind rushed through the open top, whipping my hair around my face and carrying the crisp scent of falling leaves and damp earth. In the rearview mirror, I could see my parents standing at the edge of the driveway, watching me with absolute pride and unwavering support. They weren't just watching over me; they were cheering me on as I carved out my own path.

I pressed my foot down slightly on the accelerator, feeling the raw, powerful engine respond beneath my hands. The road stretched out ahead of me, wide, clear, and entirely unwritten.

May you like

For the first time in my life, I wasn't looking in the rearview mirror for ghosts. I wasn't waiting for the other shoe to drop, or bracing myself for someone else’s temper. Every shadow had been swept away by the uncompromising light of truth and the fierce, protective love of a father who had taught me that no matter how hard you are knocked down, you always have the power to stand back up, look the world in the eye, and take back your life.

I gripped the steering wheel, smiled into the rushing wind, and drove forward into the bright, unyielding sun.
