Chapter 8 - The Sentencing

The courtroom was packed to capacity on the morning of Julian’s final sentencing. Reporters filled the press benches, cameras flashing outside the courthouse steps as high-profile figures from the city’s financial elite arrived to watch the fall of the Vale dynasty.
Arthur Vale sat alone in the second row, looking ten years older, his tailored suit hanging loosely on his frame as his real estate empire unraveled under foreclosure.
I sat in the front row beside my father and mother. I wore a sharp, tailored white pantsuit—a deliberate choice. I wasn't hiding behind oversized clothes or dark sunglasses anymore. When Julian was led into the courtroom in an orange jumpsuit, his wrists chained, his eyes swept over the room until they landed on me.
The arrogant, untouchable smirk was entirely gone. In its place was a look of raw, desperate hatred.
The judge, a stern woman with decades on the bench, read through the charges, detailing the domestic abuse, the intimidation, the deliberate destruction of family property, and the subsequent attempts to bribe witnesses.
“Mr. Vale, you have exhibited a total disregard for the law, for the safety of others, and for the basic human dignity of your victim,” the judge said, her voice echoing coldly through the oak-paneled courtroom. “Given the severity of the offenses and the unrefuted evidence presented by the prosecution, this court sentences you to four years in a state correctional facility with no possibility of parole for the first thirty-six months.”
The gavel came down with a sharp, final crack.
Bang.

Julian flinched as the bailiffs stepped forward, grabbing his shoulders and turning him toward the side exit. He cast one last venomous glare in my direction, but I didn't flinch. I stared right back at him, my chin held high, my heart completely steady.
As the heavy wooden doors closed behind him, a profound sense of weight lifted off my chest. The chapter was closed. Permanently.
