Chapter 5 - The Reckoning

Three months later, the federal case against Mark and Brenda moved faster than expected. Overwhelmed by the crushing weight of physical evidence, digital metadata, and testimony from Andrew—who cooperated fully with federal prosecutors in exchange for immunity for his family—Brenda accepted a plea deal. She agreed to testify against Mark in exchange for a reduced sentence.
The trial didn't last long. When the jury returned with a unanimous guilty verdict on all twelve counts of wire fraud, identity theft, and corporate embezzlement, Mark didn't look at the gallery. He kept his eyes locked on the oak defense table, his shoulders slumped, his expensive Brioni suit wrinkled and defeated.
He was sentenced to eight years in federal prison without the possibility of parole for the first four.
Brenda received a three-year sentence, her corporate career permanently obliterated, her marriage legally dissolved by Andrew, who had packed up his young son and moved back to his hometown in Michigan to start over with his dignity intact.
As for Crestview Developments, the board of directors—led by the Chicago investors who had witnessed the dramatic boardroom intervention—voted unanimously to restructure the company. They stripped Mark of every single share and title, reinstated my full forty-five percent voting stake, and appointed me as the interim Chief Executive Officer while we stabilized the balance sheets.
On a bright Tuesday morning in May, I sat behind the massive mahogany desk in the corner office—the very office Mark had tried to lock me out of.
Through the floor-to-ceiling glass windows, I watched the downtown traffic moving steadily below. The sunlight caught the polished brass logo on the wall behind me.
My assistant, a sharp, competent woman named Elena whom I had personally hired and mentored, knocked softly on the open door and stepped inside.
"Laura, the regional developers from the Henderson project are on line two," Elena said, smiling warmly. "They want to confirm the contract terms for the commercial park development. They said they've never seen an audit turnaround as clean and transparent as the one you delivered last week."

I picked up the desk phone, adjusted the headset, and smiled.
"Put them through, Elena."
