Chapter 6 - The New Horizon

Six months after the trial concluded, the autumn leaves had turned brilliant shades of copper and gold across the city.
I stood on the wraparound balcony of my home—the same house where Ofelia had once treated me like hired help. The house had undergone a complete renovation. Every piece of heavy, oppressive mahogany furniture had been cleared out, replaced by bright, open spaces, modern art, and light fabrics that let the morning sun flood every corner.
My father, Manuel, now eighty-two years old, sat comfortably in a cushioned armchair on the patio, sipping a cup of black coffee and reading the financial journal.
"You know, mija," Manuel said, looking up over his reading glasses with a proud, affectionate smile, "for a long time, I worried you were working too hard for a man who didn't appreciate the foundation you laid."
I walked over, pulled up a chair beside him, and looked out over the quiet, peaceful neighborhood.
"I wasn't working for him, Dad," I said softly, resting my hand over his weathered knuckles. "I was working for myself. I just had to remember who I was."
The phone in my pocket buzzed. It was a text message from Marcus Vance informing me that the final asset liquidation of the Altos Group had cleared, returning every single dollar of misappropriated funds back to the corporate reserves of Crestview Developments, along with a hefty settlement that gave our company complete financial independence from outside venture capital.

I looked at the screen, then locked the phone and slipped it back into my pocket.
I didn't need to check the ledgers every second anymore. The books were balanced. The company was thriving under my own name. And for the first time in twenty-eight years, the future belonged entirely to me.
