Chapter 4 - The Shadow of the PastTwo months later, the legal proceedings had moved with unprecedented speed, fueled by the overwhelming digital evidence Dean’s own cloud backup had provided.

The trial never made it to a lengthy jury selection; faced with overwhelming, inescapable proof of a calculated murder-for-hire and domestic terrorism scheme, Russell’s defense attorney had advised him to take a plea deal in exchange for removing the death penalty from the table.
Russell Reyes was sentenced to thirty-five years to life at a maximum-security federal penitentiary upstate. Dean received thirty. The house on Larkspur Court had been sold off quickly, its ominous reputation scrubbed clean by foreclosure proceedings and liquidation sales, with every cent of the equity funneled straight into Ana’s newly established foundation for domestic violence survivors.
Ana, Callie, and Milo had moved four hundred miles away to a sun-drenched coastal town in North Carolina, far away from the oppressive humidity of their old life.
Their new home was a charming, single-story craftsman cottage with pale blue shutters, wrap-around porches, and a massive, sprawling oak tree in the front yard that cast playful patterns of shade across the grass. There were no dark corners here, no creaky floorboards that signaled approaching terror, and certainly no closets that felt like traps.
It was a Saturday morning, and the salty breeze carried the scent of roasting coffee and pancakes from the kitchen.
Ana stood at the stove, humming softly to herself as she flipped a golden-brown pancake, wearing an apron that read Chief Family Boss. She looked healthier, her skin glowing with a vibrant, natural color, the shadows under her eyes entirely gone.
Down the hallway, the sound of booming laughter echoed as Milo chased their newly adopted golden retriever, a goofy, clumsy puppy named Buster, right into the living room.
Callie sat at the kitchen island, diligently working on her sketchpad. She was nine no longer—she had recently celebrated her tenth birthday with a massive beach party surrounded by kids from her new school who knew her only as a bright, artistic, fiercely independent girl with a brilliant smile.
The front doorbell chimed, playing a cheerful, melodic tune.
"I'll get it!" Callie called out, hopping off the stool and jogging down the short hallway.
She swung the front door open. Standing on the porch was a tall, familiar figure in a sharp blazer holding a large, ribbon-wrapped package.
"Detective Lin!" Callie’s face lit up with a massive grin.
Sarah Lin laughed, stepping inside and handing the heavy box straight to Callie. "Happy Saturday, kiddo. I was passing through the coast on my way to a conference in Wilmington and thought I’d drop by to deliver something special from the state attorney's office."
Ana walked out of the kitchen, wiping her hands on a dish towel, her eyes widening in surprise. "Sarah! What a wonderful surprise. Come in, please tell me you're staying for breakfast."
"I would love nothing more, Ana," Lin said, smiling warmly as she embraced her. She turned back to Callie, pointing at the box. "Go ahead and open it, Callie. It's official."
Callie carefully untied the thick blue satin ribbon, lifted the cardboard lid, and pulled out a heavy glass plaque mounted on a polished mahogany base. Engraved in crisp, gold lettering were the words:
Presented to Callie Reyes In recognition of extraordinary courage, quick-thinking, and heroism under extreme duress. The State Department of Public Safety honors your unwavering bravery.
Callie stared at the plaque, her fingers gently tracing the engraved letters. Memories of that terrifying night in the linen closet flickered briefly across her mind—the cold marble floor, her brother's racing heartbeat, the crushing weight of fear. But the fear had no power here anymore. It was replaced by an unshakable proof of her own strength.

"You earned every letter of that," Sarah Lin said softly, kneeling down beside her. "You saved your family, Callie. You showed the world what true courage looks like."
Ana stepped forward, wrapping her arms tightly around both Callie and Sarah, resting her chin on her daughter’s head as tears of pure joy welled in her eyes.
