Chapter 5 - Dawn on the CoastThree years passed like the turning of a peaceful page in a long-awaited book.

The cottage on the North Carolina coast had fully transformed into a home filled with light, music, and unbridled laughter. Ana had returned to college, completing her degree in social work and securing a position at a local women's advocacy center, where she spent her days helping mothers find the courage and resources to escape the very shadows she had once been trapped within.

Milo was now nine years old—the exact age Callie had been on the night that changed everything. He was a bright, energetic soccer player who laughed easily and slept soundly through every single night, untouched by the ghosts of Larkspur Court.

And Callie—thirteen now, tall, confident, and fiercely protective of her peace—stood on the front porch of their home, watching the golden sun dip below the horizon of the Atlantic Ocean.

The evening sky was painted in brilliant strokes of amber, violet, and deep crimson. The ocean waves murmured a steady, rhythmic lullaby against the distant shore.

The screen door creaked open behind her, and Ana stepped out onto the porch, holding two mugs of hot cocoa topped with mountains of whipped cream. She handed one to Callie, leaning her shoulder gently against her daughter's.

"Penny for your thoughts," Ana murmured, smiling softly as she looked out at the fading light.

Callie took a sip of the warm cocoa, looking down at her hands—hands that had once trembled so violently they dropped a phone in a dark closet, hands that now held sketchpads, soccer balls, and an entire future of limitless possibilities.

"I was just thinking about the closet," Callie said, her voice steady, entirely devoid of fear. "How small it felt back then. Like the whole world had shrunk down to four walls and a crack of light."

Ana’s smile tightened with a tender, empathetic ache. She reached over, wrapping her arm around Callie’s waist and pulling her close. "And now?"

Callie looked up, her dark eyes reflecting the brilliant expanse of the evening sky, stretching out infinitely before them without a single wall in sight.

"Now," Callie said, a radiant, confident smile breaking across her face, "the world is as big as we want it to be."
