Chapter 5 - The Fall

Six months passed.
The fall of Mateo Holloway was swift, ruthless, and complete.
Without his access to bank accounts, stripped of his corporate titles, and faced with mountains of forensic evidence proving he had embezzled millions from his former partners, Mateo became a pariah in San Pedro. The friends who had cheered for him at El Cielo stopped answering his calls. Valeria, upon realizing that his credit cards were canceled and his luxury penthouse was being repossessed, vanished overnight, taking whatever designer bags and watches she could carry.
Mateo spent months living in a cheap, windowless motel room on the outskirts of Monterrey, surviving on dwindling cash and cheap liquor. His days were consumed by frantic, desperate calls to lawyers who refused to represent him without an upfront retainer.
Every morning, he looked at the newspaper or checked news sites on a cheap prepaid phone.
Every morning, he saw the same two names.
Alejandro Vance and Camila.
With Alejandro’s legal team backing her, Camila had finalized a swift, devastating divorce. Under state law, because Mateo’s financial fraud was proven to have endangered his family’s assets, the judge awarded Camila full ownership of the remaining real estate holdings, the family accounts, and sole legal custody of their baby boy, Leo.
Alejandro had done what Mateo never could: he had protected her. He had integrated her into his life not as a trophy, but as an equal. Under his guidance, Camila took control of her own corporate trust, stepping into executive roles and blooming into a strong, confident woman who no longer shrank in fear of a husband’s temper.
One hot Tuesday afternoon, Mateo stood outside the high stone gates of the Vance Foundation Building in downtown Monterrey.
He looked unrecognizable. His once-tailored hair was long, greasy, and unkempt. His designer suit was wrinkled, stained, and loose on his thin, hollow frame. His eyes were bloodshot, sunken deep into his skull.
He clutched a crumpled manila folder to his chest—his last pathetic legal appeal, typed up by a disgraced strip-mall lawyer he had paid with his last five thousand pesos.
He saw a convoy of sleek black sedans pull up to the private entrance of the building.
Security guards in crisp suits stepped out, forming a perimeter.
Then, the rear door of the center vehicle opened.
Alejandro stepped out, looking immaculate in a dark navy suit. He walked around to the other side of the car and opened the door.
He held out his hand.
Camila stepped out. She looked radiant. Her hair fell gracefully over her shoulders, her skin was healthy and glowing, and she wore a tailored ivory dress that radiated power and grace.
In her arms, she held a healthy, chubby six-month-old baby boy dressed in a soft blue jumpsuit.
Little Leo.
Mateo’s breath hitched in his throat. Tears welled up in his sunken eyes.
“Leo...” Mateo gasped.
Driven by a sudden, frantic madness, Mateo broke away from the sidewalk and ran toward the private entrance.
“CAMILA!” he screamed, his voice cracking like broken glass. “CAMILA! LOOK AT ME!”
The security team reacted instantly. Three guards formed an impenetrable wall in front of Camila and Alejandro, their hands moving to their belts.
Camila didn't flinch. She didn't scream.
Hearing her name, she stopped and turned slowly to look at the man charging toward the barricade.
Mateo was tackled to the ground ten feet away by two guards, his face slammed into the warm asphalt of the street.
“Camila, please!” Mateo sobbed, staring up at her through the legs of the guards. “I’m sorry! I made a mistake! Please let me see my son! I’m his father! LEO! LOOK AT DADDY!”
Alejandro stepped in front of Camila, placing a protective arm around her waist. But Camila gently placed her hand on Alejandro’s chest, stepping forward so Mateo could see her clearly.
She looked down at Mateo.
There was no hatred in her eyes. There was no anger, no pain, no desire for revenge.
There was only a vast, empty, absolute nothingness.
“You’re not his father, Mateo,” Camila said, her voice clear and carrying effortlessly across the quiet pavement. “A father answers when his family calls.”
She turned her head to look at Alejandro. A warm, genuine smile touched her lips—a smile Mateo realized he had not seen on her face in years.
Alejandro reached down, his fingers gently brushing the baby’s tiny cheek. Little Leo giggled, reaching out his small hands to grab Alejandro’s tie. Alejandro laughed softly, lifting the boy higher in his arms as they walked together through the grand glass doors of the building.
The doors slid shut behind them, sealing out the noise of the street.
Mateo lay on the hot pavement, weeping uncontrollably as the security guards dragged him away from the glass tower.

He had held everything in his hands—a loving wife, a unborn child, wealth, respect, and a future.
And he had traded it all for a bottle of mezcal and a night with a mistress who didn't even remember his name.
